Ten Tips to Stay Safe This Halloween

The Roswell Police Department shares Halloween safety tips for parents to share with their kids before the big night.

  • Try to go out before it’s too late, before dark if possible. If it’s after dark, go with an adult. Make sure the adult has a flashlight and walks facing the traffic.
  • Never cross streets without looking both ways. Use sidewalks if possible and do not run between parked cars.
  • Wear costumes that fit you and that glow when lights shine on them. Parents can buy reflective tape at a local store. Never walk near lit candles or luminaries – be sure to wear flame resistant costumes.
  • If you wear a mask, make sure you can see and hear well. It's best to paint your face with makeup; it’s more fun and safer than wearing a mask. Do not cross lawns because unseen objects or uneven ground may cause you to trip and fall.
  • Never go up to a house that does not have a light on. It’s best, if a parent is not with you, that your parents tell you a preset route for you to take, only stopping at houses or apartment buildings where there are people you know. Otherwise, going trick or treating in an indoor mall. It’s safer and you don’t have to worry if the weather is bad.
  • Never play bad tricks on people by destroying their property, soaping cars, spray painting mailboxes, etc.
  • Never go into a stranger's house, always let them bring the treats to you at the door. Never eat anything that is given to you until you get home and let your parents inspect it. Eat only factory wrapped treats – Avoid homemade treats unless you know the person well.
  • If you’re old enough to go out without a parent (over the age of 12), always discuss with your parents your route and a firm time to expect you to return home.
