Forsyth County voters elected Duane Piper to be their next sheriff.
In unofficial results Tuesday Piper received 62,405 votes and his challenger, write-in candidate DT Smith received 683 votes, according to the Forsyth County Voter Registrations & Elections Department.
"In reviewing the initial report of write-ins for sheriff, DT Smith did get in excess of 680 votes," said Barbara Luth, Supervisor of Voter Registrations and Elections. "There are a lot of votes that need to be determined by the board [of elections] as to whether they will accept just Smith or DT."
Luth said she counted just the votes that stated "DT Smith" on the ballots.
"Now this [returns] is unofficial so there may be more, in fact there probably will be more rather than less," said Luth.
Results are official at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9.
Out of the 114,957 registered voters in the county, there were about 27,665 ballots cast Tuesday. There were also 45,364 ballots cast during early and advance voting and 3,067 absentee ballots by mail returned.
