There are also several metro-Atlanta Post Offices offering extended hours for last minute tax filers.

The Atlanta Main Post Office, 3900 Crown Road, which is open from 6 a.m. until midnight year round and the Boggs Road Postal Store, 1605 Boggs Road in Duluth, normally open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., will both be staffed to collect returns until midnight on April 17.

The tax-filing deadline is typically today, April 15, however filers will have two extra days this year because of Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., that will be observed this year on Monday, April 16. Under the federal tax code, filing deadlines can't fall on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays.

Atlanta District Manager Sal Vacca recommends dropping off tax forms early in the day Tuesday to avoid last minute long lines.

Other tips to consider:

  • Hand your returns to outside collection employees (where available)
  • Use Self Service Ship and Mail Centers for stamp purchases
  • Double check returns for the proper address and correct postage
  • Mail weighing 13 ounces or more must be presented at the retail counter
