Incumbents Qualify for Roswell Elections

Mayor Jere Wood is running unopposed, but three council members will have challengers on Nov. 5.

Mayor Jere Wood and three current members of the Roswell City Council have qualified to run in the Nov. 5 municipal elections.

Nobody else filed to run in the mayor's race during the qualifying period that ended at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, so Wood is ensured of serving another term.

Also declaring their intention to seek additional terms are incumbents Kent Igleheart, Jerry Orlans and Nancy Diamond, but they will have opponents in the non-partisan elections.

Igleheart, who represents Post 4, has been on the council since 2002. He barely won in 2009, edging Jim Pollak by fewer than 100 votes.

Harvey Smith, the co-chairman of the Roswell Planning Commission, is challenging Igleheart this time.

Orlans, from Post 5, is Roswell's longest-serving council member, having first been elected in 1993.

His opponent is Eric Schumacher, who spoke out last year against a used car dealership in midtown that the council rejected.

Nancy Diamond, of Post 6, easily won in 2009. She will be facing Kendra Myers Cox, who has expressed concerns about city plans for a water tank at Waller Park.

Wood was first elected in 1997. In 2009, he edged David Tolleson 40-32 percent in a tight three-way race.

The deadline to register to vote is Oct. 7, and advanced voting will take place Oct. 14-Nov. 1.
