Possible New Transportation Option in Roswell's Historic District

The city responds to questions posed by Roswell Patch readers about traffic and transportation in Roswell's Historic District.

Forget four wheels, or even two; Canton Street patrons may soon opt for three if the city passes a text amendment allowing pedicabs to travel through Roswell's historic district.

Regarding , city spokesperson Julie Brechbill told Roswell Patch that it wasn't something Roswell is currently considering, but pedicabs are.

"Our legal department is writing a text amendment to take back to mayor and council at the next [Community Development] Committee meeting in December," she said.

According to Brechbill, the city's Planning and Zoning Director, Brad Townsend, is working on a possible route for the pedicabs.

The move will hopefully invigorate more multi-modal transporation within the district, a constant goal for the city. However, for some, pedicabs aren't enough. , or vehicle traffic altogether.

But that's not a feasible option right now, said Roswell Transporation Director Steve Acenbrak.

"The bottom line is that Canton Street is a thriving commercial area that the [Roswell City] Council does not want to disrupt," he said. "The [Historic] Merchants Association has been largely against closing down the road so it has never obtained sufficient political support to move forward."

Still, Acenbrak told Roswell Patch that truck traffic on Canton Street is limited.

"Canton Street is not a designated truck route, so there should be no trucks longer than 30 feet or with weight in excess of 36,000 [pounds] per our ordinance," he said.

As a practical option, it would be very difficult to enforce the restriction of trucks to certain hours on Canton Street.

"There are many deliveries to the [historic district] businesses throughout the day," he said.
