Upgrades Set for Ga. 400 Toll Plaza

Suspension of tolls is possible during construction, according to Atlanta Journal-Constitution article.

There's a chance tolls on Ga. 400 will soon be suspended - at least for a little while.

The State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) will be making technology upgrades to the "cruise” lanes at the Ga. 400 toll plaza over the weekend of Friday, June 24 through Monday, June 27. The work could potentially impact tolls, according to an article by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Though originally set to end on July 1 of this year, the tolls were  by a vote by the state legislature last fall. Now the state authority will be making improvements to the 20-year-old toll plaza near the perimeter.

Upgrades will include the installation of new multi-protocol transponder readers in the cruise lanes and equipment upgrades in the cash lanes, including new gate arms, automated cash machines and video cameras. The new cruise technology will convert the lanes so that they may be used by "Cruise Card" holders, as well as motorists in possession of the new "Peach Pass," which will allow cruising access on the I-85 Express Lanes when they open later this summer. Either cruise pass will work on both highways.

The work plan for the weekend of June 24 requires that all southbound and northbound cruise lanes at the toll plaza to be closed, which will significantly impact traffic flow.

According to information sent to Patch by the authority, intensive construction on the cruise lanes is set to begin at 8 p.m. on June 24 and end at 5 a.m. on June 27. Once the cruise lanes are complete, work is set to begin on the cash lanes beginning Monday, June 27 and continuing through July 27 - closing one lane in each direction at any given time.

According to the state authority, motorists should expect traffic delays throughout the weekend. They "should plan to take alternate routes and expect delays as they approach the Ga. 400 toll plaza," said the release.
