Wood's Resolution on Redistricting Fails Without Second

A resolution asking Fulton County Schools to consider city lines in the redistricting process didn't receive a second motion at the Roswell City Council meeting Monday night.

The Roswell City Council did not approve a resolution to ask the Fulton County School Board to consider city boundaries within the process for school redistricting Monday night, despite urging from the mayor and several local residents.

“I support this resolution, and I’ve got to tell you, it’s for sentimental reasons,” said Wood.

In recalling his attendance of Roswell High School, he said, “That has really sort of defined my attachment to the city of Roswell.”

Wood said he understood city boundaries cannot be the total consideration in determining new school district lines, but he asked the county to look carefully at those boundaries when making their decision.

“I’m simply asking that they consider, among the many factors that they factor in, where the city lines are drawn,” he said. “I’m a city guy. I think city lines and where we grow up is important,“

Councilwoman Betty Price motioned to approve the resolution, but insisted it wasn’t done as a threat or challenge to the school board. Instead, she hoped to enhance the sense of community and protect the value of living and owning property in Roswell.

“I would hope council could see their way to support this,” Wood said.

The resolution failed when no other council member seconded Price’s motion.
