UPDATE: Cambridge Bears Lose to Osborne Cardinals, 20-0

The Milton team lost its third game of its first season.

UPDATED: Video added from Friday night's game.

Cambridge High School had opportunities on Friday night in a game against Marietta's Osborne High, but inexperience and mistakes kept the Bears out of the end zone.

The Cardinals, also winless up until this game, took advantage of the young team and won, 20-0.

Are you the Barker who used to coach at Roswell?

Concluding that "this school is a disgrace" and "Cambridge will never have a good football program" exemplifies the overemphasis on athletics that is too pervasive in our community. Let's understand some priorities. The NCAA reported last week that there 1,095,993 high school football players and 69,643 NCAA football players. Fewer than 6.4% of high school football players get to play on NCAA teams, and fewer than 1.6% of NCAA players make it to the pros. About 8 out of 10,000 high school players get to the pros. Let's examine a local favorite college team: UGA - Enrollment: 34,816 - Football Players: 98 - Football Staff: 39 So what does this have to do with the athletic announcers disrespecting the band? I am glad so very that you asked. UGA has 6 major concert bands, some smaller informal groups, and of course the Red Coat Marching Band. The marching band alone has 440 members with 3 staff. The band membership is 4 1/2 times the number of football players with 1/13th of the professional staff. Those numbers don't count the other music programs at UGA that engage hundreds of other students every day. Even a big time program like UGA only sends a few players each year to the pros, but those musicians will continue to have performing opportunities for many years to come. TURN OFF THE RECORDED MUSIC. LET THE BAND PLAY. STOP DROWNING OUT THE CHORUS. Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

You are an idiot.

Agree- let the band play !

Mr. Simpson, I know some people who would say that I am an idiot. I know more who would not. But how do we measure who is an idiot and who is not? We could look at common measurements of academic performance and see if there are inherent idiocy indicators. Did you know that students who are involved in school music programs in high school score significantly higher on standardized tests than those who aren't musicians? Study results vary, but most show at least 10% higher scores from musicians. Your actual mileage may vary, but that doesn't indicate idiocy. Data from Purdue University shows that band members take more courses, get higher grades, and graduate sooner than non-band students. At Purdue, band students are overrepresented in the STEM fields, with 70.6%, compared to 51.1% of Purdue students overall enrolled in studies relating to STEM fields. Not too idiotic either. It will likely take years to build a strong football program at Cambridge. But Cambridge musicians will go to all state and nationals this year, and the next, and the next... It seems that the best way to handle this is to turn off the amplified music and let the band play.
