Centennial Student Saves the Life of Friend

Health class lessons came in handy when Ivan Elias had to use the Heimlich maneuver on a fellow student.

A student turned unsuspecting hero Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 13, when he stepped in to save the life of his choking friend and fellow student.

After school, Ivan Elias and Greg Zelenko headed to a local store with friends to grab a snack before soccer practice. But the situation turned scary when Zelenko began to choke on a piece of gum.

As Zelenko's face turned blue, Elias, quickly thought to use the Heimlich maneuver to help dislodge the gum. It was a technique he had recently learned in his physical education/health class, taught by Rachel Wadley.

The school credits Ivan's quick thinking and Wadley's teaching with saving Zelenko's life.
