Hillside Collected Canned Soup During 'Souper Bowl'

Students got a chance to be winners in their own "big game."

Hillside Elementary got in the spirit of Super Bowl XLVI with their own “Souper Bowl” canned food drive the week before last Sunday's big game, collecting over 1,500 cans of food.

Students had the opportunity to use each can of food donated as a vote for their favorite team in the Super Bowl. The Hillside students correctly predicted the Super Bowl winner with 926 cans for The New York Giants.

“The 'Souper Bowl' was an exciting way for the students to take part in a service project that benefited our community,” said Interim Principal Cathi Barlow. “In addition to getting to vote for their favorite team with their cans, each child had the hands-on experience of helping to make a dry soup mix, which was donated to charity.”

All the canned food collected during the “Souper Bowl” was donated to to fill their need for canned soups at this time of year. This event was an extension of the Chick-fil-A Core Essentials character education program at Hillside. In February, Hillside Elementary students focus on Honor (letting someone know you see how valuable they really are). Hillside Elementary honored their neighbors and community with this food drive.

School leaders are thanking its Character Education committee: Renee Corley, Sheila Sillitto and Krisha Wilson, who implemented this project and all our monthly Core Essentials.
