Mountain Park Holds 'Walk To School Day'

Students from Mountain Park Elementary School learned about physical fitness and traffic safety in walking to school yesterday, Wednesday, May 18.

Hundreds of students from Mountain Park Elementary School participated in the school's first ever "Walk to School Day" on Wednesday.

Around 200 students from every grade from surrounding neighborhoods chose to forego the bus stop and carpool lane and walk the short distance to school, kicking off Mountain Park's "Safe Routes to School Initiative." The walk was held to encourage physical fitness, raise awareness of traffic and walking safety, as well as providing a quality experience for families.

"Because of the large neighborhoods that feed into our school there [were] multiple meeting locations with block captains to begin the walk," said school spokesperson, Jan Heston.
