Mountain Park Holds 'Waste Free' Lunch

The school reduced waste by over half.

Cutting lunchroom waste by 50 percent was the goal for the students and faculty at Mountain Park Elementary during the first ever waste free lunch recently.

The special day, held Thursday, April 26, highlighted the school's continued efforts throughout the year to recycle more and cut down on waste. A waste free lunch was the perfect way to bring all of the initiatives together. Members of the school’s Environmental Club assisted other students in putting appropriate food scraps in the worm composting bin and plastic, aluminum cans and foil juice pouches in the recycling bins.

The school cut their usual 13 bags of lunchroom trash down to five bags during that day.

Upon meeting the goal, Principal Stacy Perlman kept to her promised and died her hair green in support of the school’s efforts. The school hopes to hold more of these waste free days in the future.
