Mountain Park Students Present Check to Foster Care Organization

Local students raised their own money to donate to a local non-profit through the creation of a class business.

As part of an economics unit “Mind Your Own Business,” students from Ellen Rubin’s 5th grade Talented and Gifted (TAG) class recently made and presented a local non-profit organization with over $1,000.

Tuesday, Jan. 10, Rubin's students presented Rachel Ewald, executive director of Foster Care Support Foundation, Inc., with $1,003.91. The Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping foster children throughout Georgia with much needed clothing, toys and supplies.

To make the money they were able to donate, the fifth grade class was challenged to create their own real-world business. They brainstormed ideas for products and created a market survey before deciding on Kooky Kupz. Kooky Kupz are reusable, insulated, personalized acrylic cups with a lid and straw. The students were actively involved in every aspect of the business, including pricing, marketing, advertising, production and sales.
