Queen of Angels Team Wins Regional 'Future Cities' Title, Moves on to Nationals

Three Queen of Angels students will head to Washionton D.C. in several weeks to compete against teams from across the country in the national future cities competition.

A team of students from recently won the Georgia Regional National Engineers Week Future City competition and will compete for the national title next month.

, Marissa Muller, Sarah Hall teamed up with Queen of Angels teacher, Margaret Degance and volunteer engineer mentor William Taylor to construct a city using the SimCity 4 Deluxe software. The group built a three-dimensional tabletop model to scale with recycled materials they were able to find or purchase, spending no more than $100. 

The competition drew 152 middle school teams from the region, but in the end Taylor, Muller and Hall walked away the with the win. They will move on to compete against 37 teams in Washington D.C. during the 19th Annual Future City National Finals, scheduled for Feb. 19-21 at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, VA.

The National Finals grand prize is a trip to Space Camp in Alabama, provided by National Finals host Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading company dedicated to providing comprehensive software solutions for the infrastructure that sustains our world. The second place team receives $5,000 from the National Society of Professional Engineers and third place wins $2,000 from IEEE-USA for their schools’ technology programs. Shell is also a national sponsor for the competition.
