RHS Winterguard Ranked 34th in the World

The Roswell High School Winterguard recently returned from the Winterguard International (WGI) World Championships in Dayton, Ohio as an elite group – with a stunning final rank of 34th worldwide.

The 2013 RHS Winterguard members are: Adriana Coronel, Sarah Deppe (Captain), Alexis Dixon (Captain), Emily Freeman, Maddy Karno, Alyssa Roberts, Caroline Sandercock, Kellie Soafer (Captain), Kylie Soafer, Samantha Shaw, and Jessica Williams.

The team exceeded expectations by qualifying out of the preliminary round at the world championships to join 48 of the top Scholastic Class A units worldwide in semi-finals where they delivered their best run of the season. Competing guards traveled from England, Holland, Canada, Japan and all over the U.S.

As the first time a Roswell Winterguard unit has advanced to the semi-finals, it eclipsed their Cinderella season as last years Class AA regional Southern Association for Performing Arts (SAPA) gold medal champions. 

Winterguard is an indoor color guard activity, derived from the fall outdoor Color Guard in Marching Band. It combines the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles, and other equipment, as well as dance, gymnastics and other interpretive movement as the Guard acts in unison to themed recorded music on a painted or printed floor. Winterguard teams are judged in the areas of equipment, precision, creativity and horizontal orchestration, or how all the elements create the larger picture/general effect.

Guard Director Joey Taylor, Director of Bands Mark Adams, as well as Brandon Dailey, Melody Lopez and Beth Ball shepherded the RHS Winterguard to its most successful and historic season close.
