Families of River Eves Elementary recently gathered in the cafeteria for the annual Family Fun Service Night - a free event hosted by the River Eves PTA designed to foster a stronger school community through fellowship and participation in a local service project.
This year’s “Road Trip” theme inspired students to dress as tourists or to wear their favorite destination t-shirt, as they danced to their favorite tunes. The PTA provided free pizza, drinks and desserts.
The associated service project for this year’s event will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite. Students brought pre-packaged snacks, bottled water and travel-sized toiletries to donate to the local hospital to support the children and families there who unexpectedly have to stay overnight.
“We are honored to sponsor this event for River Eves,” said PTA Co-President Vicky Martin. “Everyone has a great time—and we teach our children how important it is to give back. It is especially meaningful for them to participate in a community project in which children help other children.”
Roswell Friends, a community volunteer group of women who live in East Roswell, is helping organize the donations for Children's Healthcare. "It's an incredibly simple fundraiser for our kids, yet invaluable to the families who suddenly find themselves staying over at the hospital," said Alison Bounds, Roswell Friends Co-President and a Community Friends Foundation Board member. "Our young children can understand the purpose of what we're doing and the families who receive these donation are so grateful to have snacks and toiletries to tie them over when they are at the hospital and unprepared for the visit."
Roswell Friends members will sort the snacks and drinks into grab-bags for the hospital staff to easily distribute to siblings and parents in need. The items will be delivered to Scottish Rite in late September by a few River Eves students and their mothers.
River Eves Elementary is located at 9000 Eves Road in Roswell.
