River Eves Jump Starts Accelerated Reader Program

The Roswell elementary school treated over 150 students to a shaved ice for reaching their reading goals.

Over 150 second through fifth grad students enjoyed a Kona Ice sweet treat for reaching their reading goal in a one week contest designed to jump start the Accelerated Reader Enrichment program at .

Accelerated Reader is a voluntary reading program for first through fifth grade students, designed to increase reading skills and improve reading comprehension, while earning points for incentives. Over 140,000 quizzes are available through the program. After reading an Accelerated Reader fiction or non-fiction book available in the school’s Media Center or public library, a child takes a brief quiz on a computer to check for comprehension. The student earns points based on his/her performance on the quiz and the difficulty of the book. The program begins for first grade students in their second semester after reading skills are more uniformly established and is fully funded by the River Eves Parent/Teacher Association.

“We have seen a positive correlation between reading achievement and participation in our Accelerated Reader program,” said Principal Neil Pinnock. “The students enjoy having a challenge or contest to motivate their desire to read, which we hope will generate both a life-long love of reading and more successful students. I’m really pleased with the numbers of students meeting our one-week challenge this year.”
