River Eves Names Staff of the Year

Jessica Veen and Cheryl Phillips were honored in a recent ceremony at the school.

recently named Jessica Veen as Teacher of the Year and Cheryl Phillips as the Professional Employee of the Year for 2012-2013. 

The school honors its best teacheres each year. Winners are nominated by their peers and observed and evaluated by a panel of judges, as demonstrating outstanding leadership, teaching and professional qualities.

“We are delighted to recognize Ms. Veen and Ms. Phillips for their excellent contributions to River Eves,” said Principal Neil Pinnock. “It is an honor that is well-deserved by both of these individuals.”

Jessica Veen, a 2nd grade teacher at the school, joined River Eves in January 2011 and made an immediate impact at the school on both her students and fellow teachers, alike.

“I am overwhelmed by how the staff has embraced me and made me feel welcome,” said Veen, who clearly loves children and believes that every child can succeed.

Prior to joining River Eves, Veen taught in Maryland. She works with middle schools girls at her church and has a passion for teaching children in Africa, where she has visited three times.

Cheryl Phillips came to River Eves in February 1997, after the school opened in 1996, and has filled many roles to support the operations of the school during that time. As office secretary, she is the “face” of the school by managing the front desk and many behind the scenes activities as well. Her list of responsibilities continues to grow, all of which she takes on with efficiency, energy and enthusiasm.

“One of the most important assets that any community has is great schools,” said Angie Browning, PTA Co-President at River Eves Elementary. “River Eves is exceptional and is made so by its outstanding, committed staff. We are very proud to have Ms. Veen and Ms. Phillips at our school.”

Phyllis Stockton, a 1st grade teacher, and Michelle Aga, a 4th grade teacher were runners up. Both Ms. Veen and Ms. Phillips now advance to the Fulton County Teacher of the Year program.
