Exploring any new subject can be fun when you’re in your pajamas and that is exactly what happened at on Friday, March 2.
To celebrate reading, all students and teachers at the school were invited to wear their pajamas in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and Read Across America Day. Parent volunteers helped with special activities, including reading to students in the classrooms, preparing “green eggs and ham,” and enjoying a fun “green” treat at lunch. Third through fifth grade students also spent the morning learning about different vocations, including authors, doctors, dancers, dentists, dog trainers and everything in between.
“Tying these two events together was a natural fit,” said Neil Pinnock, principal of River Eves Elementary. “We strive for all students to enjoy reading and writing. By showcasing how these skills are at the center of many different careers in different ways opens their eyes to what is possible. We are very grateful to all the professionals and parents who shared their valuable time and insight with our students.”
To support Career Day, 29 speakers, many of them River Eves parents, showcased their careers over a three-hour period. Students selected ahead of time three topics to attend and participated in interactive sessions to learn about what each career involves and how to get started.
“Career Day is one I am truly passionate about,” said Linda Patton-Rowles, counselor at River Eves and sponsor of Career Day. “This is our fifth year running the program and each year it gets bigger and better. It provides such a spark of imagination for our students about what they might want to do when they graduate from high school and proceed with their secondary education endeavors.”
