Roswell HS Winter Guard, Drumline Make History

The Indoor Drumline and Winter Guard recently made school history by proving their abilities as champions during the Southern Association of Performing Arts (SAPA) Championships in Chattanooga, Tn several weeks ago.

After performing their show "Frozen," the Roswell Winter Guard was crowned the Class AA 2012 SAPA Champions before a raging crowd of 4,000 spectators on March 31. Coming off a Cinderella season, it was the first time the group had earned the distiction. Each guard member was given a gold medal and congratulated for finishing first place in five of six SAPA competition events.

Addionally, the Roswell Indoor Drumline finished in fourth place, after performing “Rise of the Machines,” which featured a choreographed theatrical drill set to live music. The group closed out their inaugural season in the top five for a championship level competition.

Winter Guard is an indoor color guard activity, and like the Indoor Drumline, is one of the many extracurricular offerings within the RHS Bands program. Unlike traditional Color guard seen on the marching field in the fall, Winter Guard is performed indoors, usually in a gymnasium or arena. Performances make use of recorded music that is choreographed to drill, gymnastics and dance utilizing rifles, flags and sabers.

Roswell staff and teachers are very proud of the band programs success, congratulating all unit members. The school also recognized the great achievement made by the unit directors, Joey Taylor and Brandon Kunka.
