State, Fulton, Alpharetta & Roswell Leaders Help School Celebrate Blue Ribbon

Fulton Science Academy students and teachers were applauded for the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence honor the 10-year-old charter school received.

The warehouse turned school celebrated being one of the best in the nation as held a National Blue Ribbon Award Assembly this afternoon, Nov. 2

All of the school's students, teachers and administrators were joined by a few parents as state, county and local officials praised them for their success. Georgia's First Lady, Sandra Deal, brought her best wishes and those of her husband, Gov. Nathan Deal, to the school. Deal said she knew the students worked hard and deserved the honor that was bestowed upon them. She advised them to be kind as they sought their own success.

Georgia state School Superintendent John Barge explained just how exclusive the honor was, saying that only eight out of the state's 2,000 or more schools were nominated by the state.

"Guys, this was not an easy accomplishment for you. It was a lot of hard work by the students, a lot of hard work by teachers," Barge said. "I have a daughter who's 15. I know it's a lot of hard work by the parents."

Tony Roberts, president and CEO of the Georgia Charter School system, said the most important people at the celebration were the students of the school.

"You are setting a bar very high about what students can do," Roberts said.

Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan said she could tell great learning is going on in the school and its studnets are excited about coming to school every day. She pointed out the support for education crossed party lines, with Republicans and Democrats sharing the stage.

Next year school administrators–and students–hope to be in a new building that's under construction.
