Sweet Apple Students Learn to 'INTERACT'

Thanks to Annabel Guaracci for passing this along about a special event last week at Sweet Apple Elementary School

Sweet Apple Elementary had its inaugural INTERACT Club meeting on Wednesday, September 18.

For their first service project, Vicki Culbreth, Roswell’s Environmental Education Coordinator, spoke to 36 fourth- and fifth-grade students about the importance of water quality in our community.

Using a small-scale model of our city, some paint, and a little “simulated rain”, the students were able to see for themselves just how easily our drinking water is affected by environmental pollutants that make their way into our streams and rivers.

As Vicki commented, “Even little actions from individuals can add up to a big impact - not just when it comes to cleaning up our rivers, but also empowering students to change their outlook and understand that, even as a fourth or fifth grader, they can make a difference.”

To show their appreciation for Mrs. Culbreth, club members donated a book, The Magic School Bus at the Waterworks by Joanna Cole, in her honor to the school library. This book will be added to the many other valuable publications currently on display at the Media Center that address water pollution and the Chattahoochee Watershed. The club members intend to share their knowledge with other students about the importance of clean water.

Mrs. Culbreth wrapped up the presentation with an opportunity for students to make a difference by aiding in Roswell’s initiative to label all the storm drains throughout the city. Our budding environmentalists took to the streets and took turns adhering cautionary labels on all the storm drains around the school and Sweet Apple Village. Sweet Apple student and INTERACT Club member, Hannah Harrison, said, “It was really fun and I liked it because I felt like I helped the city.”

If there’s one thing Sweet Apple students will remember for themselves, while reminding others in the community, it’s the refrain: “Only Rain Down The Drain”!
