Young Authors’ Day Sparks Imagination at River Eves Elementary

Prior to school letting out, local students got inspired through creative writing.

Students from kindergarten to fifth grade got excited about poetry, short stories, reading, language arts and creative writing during the inaugural Young Author’s Day last month at River Eves Elementary.

The school was abuzz with activity as parents participated with students in a range of activities.

Kindergarten students rotated to six classes learning the different parts of a story. First and second grade students gave poetry and short story readings to proud parents. Third grade students broke into small groups to brainstorm, write and illustrate their own team adventures, while fourth and fifth grade students met with visiting authors to discuss and apply new skills related to creative thinking, reading and writing.

Principal Neil Pinnock said, “Young Author’s Day is all about infusing the pure joy that creative writing can bring to our students; in addition to the technical skills they need to communicate effectively as informed citizens.”

“This was a really fun and valuable activity,” said third grade teacher and grade chair, Ellen Hungerford. “My students raved about their creations and our parent volunteers were equally enthusiastic about the opportunity to tap into the creative genius of our 9-year-olds. I expect this will become an annual activity for our school.”
