Fellowship Trio Earns Soccer Scholarships

Elizabeth Johnson and twin sisters Emma and Emily Sonnett signed letters of intent last week.

Three members of the (FCS) varsity girls’ soccer team – Elizabeth Johnson and twin sisters Emma and Emily Sonnett - have all earned Division I college soccer scholarships.

The trio signed their letters of intent during a ceremony at FCS on Feb. 1: Emma and Elizabeth with the University of Georgia and Emily with the University of Virginia.

"It is indeed a great honor for these three stellar student-athletes as well as for Fellowship," said FCS girls soccer coach Trip Hughes. "Having three of our team members sign National Letters of Intent to play soccer at the next level is a wonderful prelude to our season. I know each of these girls will excel at the next level and look forward to following their achievements."

Emma Sonnett, a four-year starter and two-year captain at FCS, Emily Sonnett and Johnson led the Lady Paladins to the 2010-11 state semifinals. All three players are also nine-year members of the North Atlanta Soccer Association (NASA).

Emma Sonnett, a defender, is the Bulldogs' third ESPN Top 150 signee, garnering the accolade after being named an ESPN third-team All-America in 2010.

"Emma has really come into her own over this past year as a high level defender," UGA head coach Steve Holeman said. "She's fast, strong and courageous and can play with either foot, and she's a very good header of the ball. Emma reads the game well and has excellent defensive instincts and her communication has improved dramatically. She'll make an excellent addition to our corps of defenders."

A midfielder, Emily Sonnett is a member of the U.S. U18 Women’s National Team. She was also named as a First-Team ESPN All-American in Aug. 2011. Her twin sister was selected for the third team on that same squad. Emma was also named to the All-Region Team in 2010-11. The Sonnetts, both Marietta natives, and Johnson all spent the past nine years as members of the NASA elite teams. The trio led their NASA club to the U.S. national semifinals and a Region III Championship in 2011. They also helped NASA earn the 2010 U.S. Youth National League Championship and the 2010 Disney Tournament Championship. Their squads also advanced to the Region III Finals in 2009, and the Region III quarterfinals in 2008. Johnson and the Sonnetts helped their NASA team capture the Region III League Championship in 2008, and back-to-back Georgia State Cup Championship from 2007-2008. They also helped their NASA team notch the championship at the 2007 Washington Area Girls Soccer Championship.
