Milton Rallies in Final Seconds to Defeat Roswell and Reach Postseason

Eagles overcome Hornets 14-13 in final game of the season; they will play at Walton next week in the Class AAAAA playoffs.

The Hornets' hopes of ending their 2011 football season on a bright note by defeating rival Milton came to an abrupt end when the Eagles quarterback Colin McElroy connected with wide receiver Ryan Jenkins on a pass into the corner of the end zone with 18 seconds remaining in the game.

That touchdown and extra point gave Milton a 14-13 victory over the Hornets. The win also gave Milton (4-6 overall, 3-3 in Region 6-AAAAA) a spot in next week's playoffs. The Eagles are the No. 4 seed from the region and will play at Walton, the No. 1 seed from Region 5-AAAAA, next week.

Roswell had led the game from the second quarter when quarterback Casey Culver threw a touchdown pass to Bennett Barton for a 6-0 lead at the 8:24 mark of the second quarter.  The point after was blocked and that would come back to haunt the Hornets.

A second Roswell touchdown came when Andrew Kwateng took a pitch out and rambled 66 yards into the end zone with 18 seconds remaining in the first half. This time the extra point was good and the Hornets took a 13-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Milton finally got on the scoreboard with 7:43 left in the third quarter when McElroy ran 45 yards for a touchdown. With the extra point, the Eagles trailed Roswell 13-7.

As the Eagles drove down the field in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter, it looked like Roswell was going to take over control of the ball when they appeared to hold Milton on fourth-and-2. But a face-mask penalty gave Milton a first and goal on Roswell's 8-yard line with 36 seconds remaining.  From there, Milton went on to score the winning touchdown and extra point.

Roswell ended the season at 0-9 and 0-6 in Region 6-AAAAA.
