Roswell Team Enters Red Bull Soapbox Atlanta

The team of five friends from Roswell plan to "shake and bake" the Red Bull Soapbox Race in June.

When the Red Bull Soapbox Race speeds into town for their 2012 Atlanta pit stop in June, a Roswell team will be among those who've accepted the challenge to race in the "all-out downhill derby for everlasting glory." Translation: this should get interesting.

The team, dubbed "The Dirty Birds," consists of Josh Trombley, Ben Crist, Dave Evans, Wayne Mitchell and Michael Frost. Inspired by the racing spoof movie, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," the friends are building a Formula 1 style race car sanctioned by fictional character, Bobby. It's a Southern race fan's dream come true.

Here's what the team had to say about the upcoming derby:

What was the inspiration for your racer?

Our basic inspiration was to get the word out about our football club - to grow membership - and the Red Bull Soapbox race sounded like it would be a fun way to get a little publicity for the club. After discussing several concepts we felt that the F1 design and [Ricky Bobby] skit would be the best looking and funniest.

What are your plans for music and skit? Costumes?

Our plan for the skit is our version of the next chapter in the Ricky Bobby story. Think about the most obnoxious redneck who decides to head over to Europe to challenge one of their great race car drivers.

Do you think your racer will be the fastest? Why?

Of course, because that’s just the way it's going to be.

The derby takes place Saturday, June 9 at Peidmont Park on 10th Street. The pits open at 10 a.m. and the first race is set for noon. Follow @redbullATL for the latest on Red Bull Soapbox Atlanta.
