Student in the Stands: Hornets Falter During First Game of the Season

Roswell falls to Collins Hill yet again after a promising start goes horribly wrong. "Student in the Stands" will give a recap of local footbal games from a student's point of view.

Roswell dominated the first half by outscoring the Eagles 7-21. Andrew Kwateng had two running touchdowns and Roswell set the tempo in the game early. The Eagles then scored 17 unanswered points in the second half, beating the Hornets by a score of 21-24.

It is interesting to note that Roswell missed a botched field goal attempt in the first quarter to make the score 0-10. Eagles celebrate on midfield, in my opinion - and I know the opinion of the players and fans - very arrogantly.

First let's start with two new quarterbacks. Ryan Monty - No. 10, a junior. Monty takes the place of last years starting QB JP Douglas, who graduated. Monty looked good on the first play of the game where he threw a 46 yard pass that was negated by a holding penalty. While Monty did not play well through the air, he picked up many yards on the ground. Monty throws one pick, which eventually leads to the Collins Hill victory. Very elusive in the pocket and has great legs. Bradley Johnson - No. 3, a senior. Replacing Taylor Heinicke, Johnson has big shoes to fill. He played well and had several big throws, including the winning TD pass. But he also had some major miscues in the running game, including two botched hand offs that resulted in fumbles.

Running backs Andrew Kwateng - No. 30, a junior. Kwateng is a freak of nature - just look at his recruiting website. Kwateng had a successful first half with just below 100 yards and two scores. After the first half however, he was not effective and it obviously hurt the Roswell offense.
Jordan Parker - No. 21, a senior. Parker was impressive, especially in the second half where he had several impressive runs. The running game helped the Eagles set a tempo in the second half and take advantage of Roswell's weak run and new defensive line.

My overall impression: It was a disappointing night for Roswell after looking great for 24 minutes in the first half. The passing attack by the Hornets was not great and the running game was shut down in the second half. The defense was also poor in the second half, especially the secondary. The Hornets easily should have won this game, coming away with three fumbles in the first half alone. The Hornets were also plagued by penalties which negated several large gains and even one touchdown. Not a great start to Coach Sanderson's coaching career and not a great start to the Hornets season. It is also interesting to note that Sanderson's daughters' birthday was today. She turned one.
