Student in the Stands: Walton Runs Past Roswell

Power by an explosive running game and stifling defense, the Walton Raiders overwhelmed the Roswell Hornets, winning 45-3.

Walton hit the ground running Friday night, literally.

On the first offensive snap, junior running back Tyren Jones ran for a 59-yard gain. He stopped at the 4-yard line after being brought down by a facemask penalty.

After kicking a field goal, Walton recovered a fumble after sacking Roswell quarterback Ryan Monty. The first completed pass of the game by the Raiders was a 40-yard touchdown pass thrown by junior quarterback Parker McLeod made the score 17-0 Walton. Jones then ran for a 30-yard touchdown, making the score 24-0.

Catalyst of the Raiders offense, Tryen Jones had another huge night running the ball.

Jones ran for 217 yards on 23 carries and scored three touchdown runs. With a yards-per-carry average of 9.4, Jones had several big plays including a 64-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Only a junior, Jones has been a big part of the Raiders offense so far this season. In four games, Jones has rushed for 707 yards, scored 12 touchdowns, and has averaged an astounding 8.1 yards per carry. In three separate games Jones has run for more than 200 yards and more than two touchdowns.

The Roswell defense, which has struggled early in the season, looked promising in the first quarter. Applying pressure on the quarterback early, Roswell managed to stop the Raider pass attack. The Hornets limited the Raiders to only two completions throughout the entire game, but both were touchdown passes. While the Hornets were able to stop the pass, the defense could not contain the remarkable Walton running game. The inability to stop the run marks the third time in four games that the Hornets have given up more than 200 yards on the ground.

Offensively, the Hornets struggled significantly against Walton. After a strong start on the first drive, the Hornets stalled when on offense for the reminder of the game. Outplayed by the Walton defensive line, the Roswell offensive line could not seem to protect their quarterbacks, giving up five sacks, and could not create openings for junior running backs Andrew Kwateng and Corey Wilson. Ryan Monty played well in the first quarter, at one time completing six passes in a row. However, Monty fumbled a snap in the second quarter and was soon sidelined with an injury after being sacked.

Following an impressive first quarter of play, the Hornets could not manage to find their game yet again. While the Hornets remain winless so far this season, next week's match up against the North Forsyth Raiders, who are 0-4.
