Toms, Atlanta Athletic Club a Great Combination

2001 PGA champion David Toms returns to site of his greatest triumph and ties for fourth place.

There's no question that David Toms is fond of the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Toms won his only major championship at the Highlands Course in 2001 and was in contention this year, despite being 44 years old and without the long game typically needed to compete.

Toms wound up tied for fourth place, three shots out of the playoff. He had a 67 on Sunday, leaving him 8-under for the two weekend rounds.

“I don't know, I just feel comfortable in Atlanta,” Toms said. “Doesn't matter what course it is, I've always played well in this city and I love coming here.”

Toms said he felt more relaxed at the start of the final round this year than he did in 2001. He certainly didn't have the same sort of pressure.

“So today was a little more fun out there, telling stories and just having a fun day,” he said. “Where it was a little more nerve-wracking last time.”

• McIlroy Happy to Finish Play After Injury

Rory McIlroy was happy to get out of town while he was still reasonably healthy. The reigning British Open champion injured his wrist three holes into the first round, but still managed to make the cut and wound up tied for 64th at 11-over 291.

“To be honest, I'm glad to be done,” McIlroy said. “I basically played 70 holes of this tournament not at 100 percent, so it was always going to be tough. Still, some good play out there the last few days, birdied the last, so nice to come off with a positive.”

McIlroy injured the tendons in his right forearm when he struck the root of a tree with his approach shot on the third hole on Thursday. He played with the arm taped the remainder of the week after doctors told him the injury could not get worse if he decided to keep playing.

Phil Mickelson never got any momentum going this week and wound up tied for 19th at even-par 280. He closed with a 70.

“I felt like I was one good round away, 4 or 5 under par the first three days, of getting in it, but wasn't able to do it,” Mickelson said. “I really struggled making birdies here.”

Mickelson struggled with his approach shots, never finding the rhythm that would allow him to put the ball close.

“Its very difficult to get the ball close on a lot of the pins, other than the par 5s, and I just didn't make enough 30-40 footers,” Mickelson said.

• Woodstock Native's PGA Debut a Successful One

Woodstock native Chris Kirk closed with a pair of 69s and made his PGA Championship debut a successful one. Kirk, the former All-American from the University of Georgia, tied for 34th at 2-over 282.
