The Historic Roswell Town Square hosts the event, which draws visitors from around the region. Local civic organizations, churches and businesses sign on as sponsors – for a fee – to compete in several categories in a contest judged by local community leaders. But the afernoon is about serving up ice cream.

Just getting to taste and eat ice cream should be enough for the kids, but there's more. An ice cream contest lets kids literally dive into the ice cream – face first – to see who can eat the most the fastest. And there's usually an expert ice cream cone stacker contest, challenging kids to put scoop after scoop on top of each other in a perfect presentation. Not only that, but there's a Kids Korner at the Ice Cream Crankin' as well.

The weather is cooperating on Sunday as well, with Tropical Storm Isaac still a long ways away from here. Temperatures will be in the high 80s during the Ice Cream Crankin' with partly cloudy skies, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

The Ice Cream Crankin' benefits The Drake House, which offers emergency residential housing and support services to homeless single mothers and their children.
