Dr. Denmark, World's 4th Oldest Person Dies in Athens

Doctor Leila Denmark, who moved to Athens, Ga., a few years ago, dies at age 114.

The world has lost one of its oldest residents with the death Sunday of Leila Denmark, a former Alpharetta resident. She was the 4th oldest person in the world. She had been getting round-the-clock medical care for many weeks. Before she moved to Morton Street in Athens to be with her daughter, and only child Mary Denmark Hucherson, she lived in Alpharetta and practiced medicine until she was 103. Her career began during the early 20th Century when Denmark graduated in 1926 from the Medical College of Georgia. She was only the third woman to do so, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald. She moved to Atlanta and was the first resident doctor at Egleston Children's Hospital. Andrew Wordes Laid to Rest in Milton Fields

Roswell's "Chicken Man" remembered in tears and laughter at Friday morning memorial service.

Andrew Wordes was laid to rest this morning, March 30, with family and friends sharing memories before sending him back to the earth The words of Psalm 23 had visible reminders in the setting, particularly "God causes me to lie down in lush pastures." Approximatley 100 people gathered in the lush pasture of Milton Fields for the service. Jim Bell, owner of the eco-friendly burial grounds Milton Fields on Birmingham Road, donated a plot to the Wordes family for his burial. A lover of animals and friend to many, he was known as "Chicken Man" for his battle with Roswell over keeping them at his home. He faced eviction on the day his home exploded with him inside.

Wordes' Family, Friends Plan Memorial Service

Andrew Wordes, also know as Roswell's Chicken Man, will be buried Friday in Milton Fields, just north of Roswell.

The family and friends of Andrew Wordes have organized a Friday memorial service for Roswell's Chicken Man, according his good friend Patti Silva. "The funeral has been set and all the arrangements have been made," Silva told Roswell Patch, after speaking with Wordes brother. Jim Bell, owner of the eco-friendly burial grounds Milton Fields on Birmingham Road, donated a plot to the Wordes family for his burial. "It's right in line with Andrew's purpose and his feelings about sustainability," Silva said. "It's just the most beautiful, perfect place, very peaceful." Despite the explosive way Wordes life ended Monday when his house went up in flames, those who loved him hope to memorialize him on Friday in a peaceful, non-controversial manner…

Funeral Held Saturday for Roswell Resident Ora Coleman, 89

The Coleman Road namesake died Sunday, Jan 29.

Lifelong Roswell resident, Ora Coleman, 89, was found dead in his home Sunday, Jan. 29, according to the Roswell Police Department and his neighbors. His funeral will be held Saturday, Feb.4 at Roswell Funeral Home on Mansell Road. Coleman - part of the namesake Coleman Road family - was born and raised on Coleman Farms. During his childhood the family owned 125 acres of land in the area near the historic district of Roswell, but as of four years ago Coleman had sold off much of the property until he only had to maintain a six and a half acre farm. Several years ago he told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the property was worth over a million dollars, but he would never sell the land which he had known all his life and continued to …

Dr. Allen R. Myers, Former Physician at Roswell Medical Clinic

The visitation will be Tuesday at Northside Chapel, with the memorial service on Wednesday.

Dr. Allen R. Myers, 71, of Pueblo, CO, passed away November 16, 2011. Dr. Myers was born November 11, 1940 in Carmi, IL, son of the late Allen and Beth (Setser) Myers. Allen graduated from Manatee High in Bradenton, FL in 1958. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Florida in 1962 and his Doctorate of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia in 1966. He interned in the U.S. Naval Hospital Jacksonville, FL before reporting to the Naval Aero Medical Institute, Pensacola, FL, where he completed his flight surgeon training in 1968. He was Lt. Commander Medical Corps, US Navy on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet where he served as the flight surgeon during the Vietnam War. In 1974, he joined the Roswell …

The legendary voice of Georgia football died Sunday night at his home in Athens at the age of 89.

Larry Munson, whose legendary calls of University of Georgia football success echoed in the ears of the Bulldog Nation for four decades, died Sunday night in Athens. Munson, 89, died at his home with complications from pneumonia, his son Michael told the University of Georgia athletics website. Funeral arrangements for Munson had not been determined as of Sunday night. The beloved broadcaster was the “Voice of the Bulldogs” from 1966 to 2008, during which his passion for the Red-and-Black created some of the more memorable radio calls in college football history. UPDATE: Sixth-Grade Queen of Angels Student Dies

Despite efforts to save her, Brennan Passons had a severe asthma attack on Monday evening and did not recover.

UPDATE Wednesday, 1:46 p.m.: Funeral arrangements have been made for the sixth-grade Queen of Angels student, Brennan Passons, who died of a severe asthma attack Monday evening, despite efforts to save her.  The family will hold a visitation at St. Peter Chanel Church on Thursday evening at 6 p.m-8 p.m. The funeral will also be held at St. Peter Chanel Church on Friday at 2 p.m., with the burial to immediately follow. "It has been a very sad day here at the school, but one in which a lot of love and support has been displayed," Queen of Angels Principal Kathy Wood told parents in a letter, Tuesday. Services were held at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church this morning, Tuesday, July 19.

UPDATED: July 20, 11:18 a.m. - Hundreds turned out for the funeral services held Tuesday morning at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church for Brittney Watts, the 26-year-old woman fatally shot in Midtown Atlanta on Friday. From the somber atmosphere, it was apparent that the loss of Watts - a native of Roswell and graduate of both Roswell High School and the University of Georgia - had a significant impact on her hometown of Roswell. The woman friends say was always so positive and upbeat had only recently returned to the Atlanta area, moving into a Decatur neighborhood with her husband. Remembering a Roswell Music Man with a Big Heart

As the lead singer of "hippie jam-band" Swami Gone Bananas, Gary Dreyfuss was beloved by fans, friends and family alike.

For 15-plus years, the renowned Atlanta bandSwami Gone Bananas entertained scores of enthusiastic tie-dye-garbed fans of the hippie/jam band genre. Inspired by the Grateful Dead, Swami Gone Bananas began as a tribute band to the Grateful Dead after the death of the their head honcho, Jerry Garcia, in 1995. Originally composed of Gary Dreyfuss, Mike "Swami" Schulman, Richard Hurt, and Bobby Andre, the groovily-monikered group started Swami Gone Bananas and quickly landed a gig at Mike 'n' Angelo’s in Buckhead. Soon afterwards, J.R. Hawkins replaced drummer Andre and they rocked the place for a decade. “We played weekends at Mike 'n' Angelo’s for 10 years. It's one of the longest runs for a band in any Atlanta nightclub ever,” said Hawkins. …

Former Roswell Resident Dies at 97

Lebanon Baptist Church member, Hazel Wall, died Monday, May 16, 2011.

A former Roswell resident, Hazel Wall, 97, died yesterday, May 16, following a brief hospitalization.  Born September 17, 1914, Wall had been a Roswell resident since she moved here from Washington with her late husband, Harold, to be close to family 12 years ago in 1999. She was the oldest member of Lebanon Baptist Church in Roswell, faithfully attending Sunday school and morning worship service until two years ago, when she moved to assisted living at Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville.  Those who knew her say she will be remembered for her determination to attend Sunday school and church, if at all possible. During her younger years she faithfully taught Sunday school for kindergarten children.
