In 2011, eight people were killed in traffic crashes in Georgia between Christmas and New Years Day and there were 401 people were arrested for driving under the influence. A recent story in Decatur-Avondale Estates Patch highlighted the problem with cycling safety on local streets. It noted that cyclist Dave Mathews, injured in a bad bike wreck 18 months ago, has made cycling safety an issue. His passion on the subject was fueled after a pickup struck and killed cyclist Paul Taylor and authorities announced last week nobody will be prosecuted. The reason the authorities gave was that they don't have the evidence to make a case. "We're human beings, too," said Mathews, who started a Facebook page about bike safety in Atlanta. You may be surprised how many parents and caregivers in your community think they're properly protecting children – but are not. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children one through 12 years old. Based on NHTSA crash data in 2010, on average, almost two children were killed and 325 children were injured each day. The fatality rate could be reduced by half if the correct child safety seats were always used. Georgia State Patrol investigated more than 300 crashes and at least one drowning at Lake Lanier.
Nineteen people died in traffic-related accidents across the state over the 4th of July holiday weekend. The Georgia State Patrol investigated 313 accidents from 6 p.m. on Friday, July 1, through midnight on July 4; 230 of them were injuries and 14 deaths. The other five fatalities were reported by other law enforcement agencies. According to Robin Stone with GSP Post 37 in Cumming, one of the fatalities occurred on Highway 53 and Young Place in Dawson County at about 10:35 p.m., Saturday, July 2. GSP spokesperson, Lt. Paul Coster said, Michael Martinez, 27, of Dawsonville was killed in the head-on collision and that the accident is under investigation. A Roswell teenager was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite last night after being hit by a vehicle while crossing Woodstock Road during the city's Alive After 5 event in the historic district. According to the Roswell Police Department report, the 14-year-old boy was struck by the Toyota 4Runner when he crossed in front of oncoming traffic "improperly" on Woodstock Road near the Canton Street intersection.
