Galina Herndon's painting will be the symbol for the 2013 Decatur Arts Festival.
Roswell artist Galina Herndon's original painting, entitled "Fall Ride," has been selected to be the 25th Silver Anniversary poster and t-shirt of the Decatur Arts Festival. The painting by Herndon, who has a studio at Elegant Attic in Roswell, was selected by a jury of judges with over 163 entries for the festival, which will be held May 25-26. A native of Russia, Herndon teaches painting classes and sells her one-of-a-kind original art and limited edition prints at Elegant Attic. "We are so excited to have Galina here at our shop," said Elegant Attic owner Nora Maccaro. The Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund (MAAF) announced the 2012 recipients of the Fund’s prestigious grants at a Dec. 6 luncheon, including Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET), which was awarded a $40,000 grant toward general operating support. This marks a significant investment in GET by the metropolitan corporate community. The Theatre is very proud of this award and the support that it represents here in North Fulton, one of the fastest growing areas in the South. When the Queen of Angels student died from asthma complications last year, many were inspired to give to her memorial, which helps fund the school's art programs.
The young girl whose untimely death has inspired so many would be proud - Brennan Passons Memorial Fund for the Arts raised $22,228 in its first year, 2011-2012. "Brennan touched so many in so many ways and gave unselfishly in any way possible," Sarah Passons, Brennan's mother, told Roswell Patch in an e-mail. "We are so proud of her and so grateful for everyone that gave so much of their time, money and love to her memory." The memorial fund was begun as a way to pay tribute to Brennan, who died from asthma complications in October 2011. The fund money goes toward several arts programs at Brennan's school, Queen of Angels Catholic School in Roswell. Each year, the Roswell Cycling Festival include's the Roswell Criterium, the Mayor's Ride, several recreational rides in local parks and the Kids' Bicycle Safety Rodeo. Hit hard by the recession, Kudzu Playhouse will be closing in January 2011.
On January 14th, 2011, Jeannie and Wally Hinds will lock the doors to the Kudzu Playhouse for the last time. Like many small businesses, the recession has been hard on the Kudzu Playhouse. According to Mr. Hinds, "It costs $7,000 each month to cover just the rent and utilities for the theater. We depend completely on donations and ticket sales to cover these expenses and, unfortunately, audiences have dwindled over the last couple of years as people look for ways to cut back." The Hinds have been passionately involved in the metro Atlanta community theater scene for over 20 years.
