Roswell Fire Department’s Fire Educator Chris Cooper was recently named “Fire Safety Educator of the Year” by Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens at the 19 Annual “Life, Fire & Safety Awards” ceremony. Cooper, who oversees Roswell’s fire education for local schools and citizens, was nominated by Paul Piccirilli, deputy fire chief and Becky Lane, fifth grade teacher at Sweet Apple Elementary School. “Since Chris has been employed with our office, he has enhanced the fire safety education program in many ways. Crabapple Middle School and Mimosa Elementary need local voters to support their quest to win $50,000 in grant money from the Clorox Company's "Power a Bright Future" program.
Students at local schools Crabapple Middle School and Mimosa Elementary School already have bright futures ahead, but your votes could make them just a bit brighter if they're enough to win Clorox's "Power a Bright Future" program and the grant money it may bring. In a move to fund school programs that "are vital for educational development," the Clorox Company's Power A Bright Future program will award four $25,000 grants and one $50,000 grant to schools nationwide. Until early last week, parents and teachers from across the country were able to nominate schools by sharing how a grant would be used at their school. Patrice Pniewski, a registered nurse at North Fulton Hospital, was recently given the DAISY Award for Nursing, a profound honor since nominations are submitted by patients and peers. A nurse on the Intensive Care Unit, Pniewski's dedication, compassion and leadership are evident to all who come into contact with her, according to the hospital release. “Patrice was one of our ICU nurses last week caring for my mother who had a tumor removed from her brain. In an effort to be completely transparent, Roswell City Council deferred a contract with the Roswell Convention and Visitor's Bureau during Monday's meeting.
After going over the proposed budget and learning a little bit about the new Roswell Business Alliance Initiative, the Roswell City Council decided to defer signing a contract for $175,000 to fund the start up until councilmembers could get more clarity. Both Roswell and Alpharetta were recently awarded the Agency of the Year honor in their respective categories, which are based on population. Each year the Georgia Recreation and Park Association recognizes cities statewide for their excellence and leadership in providing quality recreation. Roswell won in the over 80,000 category, while Alpharetta won in the 30,001 to 80,000 category. While both cities have been honored with this award previously, this marks the first time both cities were recognized as Agency of the Year for the same year. Longtime Cobb County resident to receive PGA's highest honor on the 30th anniversary of his first major championship.
The latest chapter in the improbable golfing life of Larry Nelson will be written next week when the quiet man from Cobb County receives the highest honor accorded by the PGA of America. Nelson, who didn’t start playing golf until he returned from Vietnam, will be awarded the PGA of America's Distinguished Service Award in a ceremony on Aug. 10 at The Cobb Energy Centre.
