Question of the Week: How Much Have You Spent on 'Back-to-School?'

With school districts across the metro area now officially back-to-school, we begin a series of weekly questions, which, today, is focused on the subject of spending.

With the school year now officially underway, many parents have spent countless hours at local stores helping their students find the right pencils, perfect "first day" outfits and fill school supply lists. The National Retail Federation projects that parents of children in grades K-12 will spend nearly $689 on their children's back-to-school needs, almost $85 more than last year. Georgia shoppers didn't pay sales tax on any back-to-school items within a certain dollar amount this past Friday and Saturday. But some criticized the tax holiday as being too little, too late. Bringing us to our questions of the week:

Fulton County Schools Prepare to Open in Roswell Aug. 13

The 2012-2013 school year starts on Monday, Aug. 13, for thousands of children in Fulton County.

The Fulton County School System continues to be the fourth largest school district in Georgia with a projected 2012-2013 enrollment of nearly 93,200 students – an expected increase of nearly 700 students from the previous school year. The system includes 100 schools – 58 elementary schools, 19 middle schools, 17 high schools and six start-up charter schools. Fulton County Schools became Georgia’s largest charter system in July. Over the next five years, its charter status will strengthen the district’s ability to provide flexibility in its operations with the result of increased student achievement.   The first year – 2012-2013 – of the five-year charter will focus on developing School Governance Councils for 20 schools (called “Cohort 1…

Prevent Back Pain With Backpack Safety Tips

You and your child can work together to ensure a successful school year without back pain.

It's about time to start buying school supplies for your child. Although it's easy to pick out pens, paper and markers, other choices must be made with greater considerations. Take, for example, the backpack (or bookbag). You may buy your child a backpack because it has his or her favorite super hero or princess on it, or maybe it has your child's favorite color. However, improper use of the backpack can lead to back pain in your child and start habits of bad posture that carry on into adult life. What is a "bad" backpack? I remember a conundrum I had in sixth grade. I couldn't figure out how to work the combination lock on my locker, so I ended up lugging my heavy textbooks around in my backpack every day. This wrecked my back. I still …

Retired Fulton Educators Sought as Mentors

Paid positions are grant funded. Applications close Aug. 15.

Fulton County Schools is looking for its best and most effective retired teachers to come back to serve as mentors to new teachers. The new teacher mentors will each work with three teachers and guide their development through their first year of teaching students. They’ll help the newcomers learn the ropes of classroom management and how to work collaboratively with other teachers and parents, and also how to effectively teach the new Common Core Georgia Performance Standards to students of multiple learning styles and skill levels. “A teacher’s first year is one of excitement and big rewards, but it can also be a little intimidating,” said Superintendent Robert Avossa. “The Mentor Program pairs new teachers with experienced, retired …

Back To School? Already? Where Did Summer Go?

Patch's "Question of the Week" asks, are metro Atlanta kids heading back to school too soon?

Used to be, kids in most metro Atlanta area schools went back into the classrooms after Labor Day. Man, those were the days. For the 2012-13 school year, Decatur schools open Aug. 1, and city of Atlanta students hit the books Aug. 6. DeKalb and Fulton county schools open on Aug. 13. To some, it seems as if summer vacation gets shorter and shorter each year. To others (harried parents running out of kid-friendly entertainment options, perhaps?), it can't come soon enough. So our question to kick off this week is: do you feel that summer vacation is too short? Do kids head back to school too early? Or do they need that classroom time in order to prepare themselves for a successful future? Take our Patch poll and share your opinion in the …
