Whipping up the perfect meal just got easier thanks to “Just A Taste” - Barrington Hall’s first cooking show series. Filmed in the historic home’s kitchen, “Just A Taste” features five short instructional videos hosted by Chef John Wilson, including: Videos and recipes are available on the city's website. RCTV will air one video a month for the next five months. Wilson, the owner of Culinary Vacations, Inc., is a certified chef and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. Back by popular demand, Ale Yeah! will host its second craft beer tasting at the historic home on April 12.
Local history will meet what's current in beer when Roswell's Ale Yeah! hosts a tasting at Southern Trilogy home, Barrington Hall, on April 12. Several types of beers will be available for sampling, along with hors d'ouevres at the local merchant's second tasting event, according to the city website. But if you want to go, you better make your reservations now: the response was so overwhelming for the first tasting, people had to be turned away. To handle the crowd this time organizers will hold two sessions, Friday, April 12. The cost of admission is $20 for either session, but advance reservations are required. Plans are well underway for the third annual Roswell Lavender Festival and organizers are currently accepting vendors for the event. The festival - which is held at Barrington Hall and has become a local favorite - is specifically looking for local artisans, antique dealers, garden art and plants, and specialty items. Deck the halls and help "make a wish" by visiting Roswell's Barrington Hall during two open houses this season. Tour the seasonally decorated historic home free of charge with the opportunity to purchase one-of-a-kind wreaths donated by local Roswell merchants and individuals. Sales of these wreaths will benefit the Make-A-Wish Georgia chapter. Prices begin at $30. A 2011 grant from The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. will help the restoration.
As Barrington Hall continues its expansion and restoration of the West Garden, the historic home was the recent recipient of a 2011 grant from The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., which partners with other local organizations in awarding these coveted grant. The Historic Landscape and Garden Grant Program recently graced Barrington Hall with a grant valued at $2,000 which enabled the historic home’s horticulturist and volunteers to begin the daunting task of restoring these long-neglected gardens located on the west side of the historic property’s seven acres. “We have several sources of written documentation for this area," said Janet Rigsby, staff horticulturist. Barrington Hall recently announced the recent expansion of its gift shop. Located in the hall’s modern kitchen, the shop now offers a much larger selection of gifts and keepsakes to visitors, including many pieces created by local artisans. Featured items include a selection of pottery and ceramics by the Roswell Clay Collective, handmade jewelry, original paintings, books on the Civil War in Georgia, children’s toys from the 1800s, and a variety of other assorted souvenirs. The project was coordinated Deb Carr, a Friends of Barrington Hall board member, in an effort to create an exciting retail space within the building. With pen and paper in hand, Roswell youth will once again have the opportunity to develop creative writing skills during Kids Can Write, a writing camp hosted on five consecutive Saturdays in October and November at the historic Barrington Hall. Led by award-winning children’s book author Mary Ann Rodman, Kids Can Write will teach children how to tell stories clearly while engaging their audience. Do you love history? Do you like talking about history and interacting with other people? If you do, you might consider becoming a docent at Barrington Hall, the antebellum house museum that was the home to Barrington and Catherine King, as well as generations of their descendants. A docent is a volunteer who acts as a guide in historic homes, museums and art galleries. Barrington Hall, as well as Roswell’s Smith Plantation and Bulloch Hall, all use docents to guide tours throughout the properties. Docent training is scheduled for July 17, 19, 24 and 26 at 7 p.m. at Barrington Hall. Visitors who flocked to the inaugural event last year won't want to miss the added fun this year.
History truly lives on with the advent of the second annual Roswell Lavender Festival at Barrington Hall this weekend. Inspired by a member of Roswell's founding family, Evelyn Simpson, the well-attended festival pays tribute to the lavender plantings she established on the grounds of Barrington Hall. “The success of last year’s festival, the first of its kind, was overwhelming. We had visitors from all over the state attend the festival, see Barrington Hall for the first time and enjoy a day filled with all things lavender,” Robert Winebarger, site coordinator at Barrington Hall, said in a press release on the city's website.
