The Final Four is in Atlanta and these 26 players from Georgia, including a player from Roswell, hope the road to the championship game takes them home.
March Madness is here, and although no Georgia schools are in the 2013 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament brackets, there will be a distinct Peach flavor on the road to the Final Four. The Final Four returns to Atlanta — scheduled April 6 and 8 — for the fourth time in history. Atlanta has hosted the final rounds in 1977, 2002 and 2007. The Division II and III championship games are April 7 at Philips Arena. The NCAA field also includes more than two dozen players from Georgia who are on the rosters of 17 tournament-bound teams, according to data on Rivals.com. Roswell is gearing up to host a men’s basketball league for spring 2013. Teams will compete in a 10 game regular season followed by a single elimination tournament. Games will be played on Mondays. The entry deadline is Friday, Feb. 15. The league will begin as early as Feb. 25. Managers can register their prospective teams at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill Street suite 100, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. Registration fee: $525 per team. No additional player fees. April 2013 will be a basketball extravaganza in Atlanta as the city will host the 2013 NCAA Men’s Final Four tournament at the Georgia Dome and, for the first time in tournament history, the Division II and III championships at Philips Arena. In order to make Final Four weekend a true success, the Atlanta Local Organizing Committee (ALOC) is seeking more than 2,000 volunteers to help with everything from greeting guests at Atlanta hotels to assisting with youth and community events that are expected to draw thousands of locals and visitors from April 5 – 8.  Next year will be Atlanta’s fourth time hosting the Final Four and marks the 75th celebration of March Madness. Even if you've never watched a game, GA 400 commuters will appreciate the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday morning, as the team is paying for all tolls on GA 400. From 7 a.m.-9 a.m., the Atlanta Hawks will sponsor northbound and southbound tolls, including the 50 cent and cashier lanes, and the Cruise Card/Peach Pass lanes. The tolls are being paid in partnership with the State Road and Tollway Authority. Not only will the tolls be paid. The boys basketball team can't play in region and state tournaments this season, and the school was fined for "undue influence" toward students transferring to the school.
Milton High School lost its boys basketball coach, David Boyd, and now the team has lost any chance to be in the state tournament this season. "The Georgia High School Association has placed the boys’ basketball program at Milton High School on probation for the 2012-13 season for violating GHSA rules in regard to 'undue influence',” GHSA reported on its website earlier today, Oct. 9. The team will not be eligible to participate in the region tournament or the state tournament. The program will be on "Severe Warning Status" during the next school year, but it will be eligible for post-season play in the 2013-2014 season. Milton High also had to pay an undisclosed fine. The Roswell Recreation and Parks Department is registering adult women for the upcoming basketball league season now.
Roswell women ages 18 and up are encouraged to sign up now for the city's spring basketball league. A 10 game season offers local women a chance to get in shape, bond with friends and exert their competitive side a little. Registration - which continues through Feb. 17 - is by team only and costs $525 for all 10 team members. Shanteona Keys signs with Georgia College & State University.
Roswell High School senior, Shanteona Keys, signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Georgia College & State University on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. She will join the university's team next year.
