Chattahoochee High School in North Fulton soccer will sponsor a 5K race and 1M fun run/walk March 23 on the Hooch track and cross-country trail to benefit Roswell's STAR House. The 5K race will start at 9:30 a.m. and the 1-mile fun run/walk will begin at 10:30 a.m. Entry fees range from $10 to $20 and include a T-shirt option. In addition to benefiting Hooch Soccer, a percentage of early registration net proceeds will be donated to the STAR House, which supports at-risk children in North Fulton by providing after-school tutoring, school supplies, leadership activities and recreational programs. Some of the biggest names in music will play at a benefit concert on Wednesday. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims, via the Robin Hood Foundation.
Huge names in music are lending their talents to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the “12-12-12” concert on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Every penny sold from ticket sales will go directly to Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm, including over 200 Patch towns in New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. The all-star lineup includes Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Dave Grohl, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West, The Who and Paul McCartney, with other artists to be announced. Local restaurants Little Alley Steak, INC. and Salt Factory will cater the fundraising event Saturday, Oct. 13. Tickets are still on sale.
This weekend do something fun. Do something good. Go dancing under the stars during a "STARRY Night," the annual STAR House fundraiser. The fundraiser has typically been held in a large private Roswell home, but this year it will be held at the historic Voila Salon, which is an old millworkers' duplex that was renovated into a salon. The event will include live auction, music, dining and dancing. Roswell Rotary is a Celestial Sponsor this year. And Little Alley Steak, INC. and Salt Factory on Canton Street will donate all the food for the event. Voila Salon is located at 90 Sloan Street in Roswell, but there will be no on-site parking. Roswell Mayor Jere Wood will hold the 36th Annual Mayor’s Barbeque Ball on Oct. 20 at Miss Tillie’s house in the woods. This year the ball will benefit The Drake House, which provides crisis housing and empowerment programs for homeless mothers and their children who are from the North Fulton area. Next weekend, Cross of Life Lutheran Church in Roswell will host its third annual “Language of Love” dinner to benefit its missions in Africa, The Philippines and India. The evening, which is free and open to the community, will include food from around the world, multi-cultural entertainment, silent and live auctions. Funds raised by the auctions will be donated to three of the church’s charitable causes, including: The evening will begin with the silent auction, during which refreshments will be served, followed by a welcome message that will include blessings in various languages. Act Together Ministries has been chosen as the recipient of the 36th Annual Lawrence Awards charity benefit. The event will be held Sept. 9 at Naylor Hall in Roswell and follows an American Idol format where singers will compete for studio time. Act Together Ministries is a children’s charity in Alpharetta. Act Together serves children in distress, specifically foster children, children from low-income families and children in single parent homes. Programs and services are open to families throughout the north metro Atlanta area. The Lawrence Awards began many years ago with a local Atlanta-area pianist, Larry Williams, who had a large following of singers who performed with him at local piano bars. Students at River Eves Elementary proudly participated in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Pennies for Patients program, one of LLS’s national School & YouthSM Programs that raises money to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma while providing information and support services to patients and their families.
