New Bike Regs at Chattahoochee NRA

The proposal would allow bicycles on new sections of trails at Sope Creek in the Cochran Shoals unit.

A draft regulation allowing bicycles on new sections of trails at Sope Creek in the Cochran Shoals unit of Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is now available for comment on the Federal Register until September 30. "This is part of the standard process for any new federal regulation," said park superintendent Patty Wissinger. "The new regulation basically enacts the bicycle trail use plan that was adopted in the 2010 Environmental Assessment Proposed Trail Connection." Because the plan proposed to allow bicycles on trails not previously used for that purpose, the park was required to follow the process for creating a new federal regulation. The National Park Service draft regulation primarily focuses on the newly constructed …

Roswell Resident Bikes to Work, Improves Health, Saves Money

Bill Hamilton bikes from his home in Roswell to his job in Alpharetta every day.

It's National Bike to Work Week, but Roswell's own Bill Hamilton doesn't need a special week to ride - he does it every day. Hamilton commutes the 9.5 miles from his Roswell home to the LexisNexis office in Alpharetta on his bike nearly every day. There are plenty of cycling benefits that appeal to Hamilton - who saves about $180 on gasoline per month - but one especially sticks out. "The main benefit for me is the way it makes you feel; you feel better. Your body is working well," he said. Hamilton may be onto something. The metro Atlanta area has some of the worst traffic in the country, leading to more time spent in a car by commuters each year. A recent study by Washington University in St. Louis found that longer commutes can cause …

Bike, Pedestrian Bridge Planned to go Over Chattahoochee

A public meeting on the project was held, this week.

If you’ve ever used the sidewalk on the Roswell Road bridge over the Chattahoochee River, you know it can be scary; especially if you are jogging or on a bicycle. A joint project between Roswell and Sandy Springs promises pedestrian and bicycle enhancements that would improve safety and could ultimately connect parks in both cities. “Both Roswell and Sandy Springs want an eye-catching gateway structure,” said Mark W. Holmberg, consultant on the $2.8 million project. Public input meetings on the project were held on Tuesday at Sandy Springs City Hall and last week in Roswell. Few citizens attended the Sandy Springs meeting. The proposed project could include construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge, 500 feet in length over the …

I will fully support this when I see the programmed and budgeted plan from Sandy Springs on Bicycle Facilities linking from the river going south. Roberts Drive is the only option I see, and was designated for a bicycle facility on their 2008 Transportation Plan. Extend it all the way down Roberts Drive to the newly-built bike lanes in Dunwoody. Here's some of the history I've had with Sandy …   more ›

Viewfinder: Roswell Mayor Leads Bike Ride to Capitol

Roswell Mayor Jere Wood led hundreds of cyclists from the city to the state capitol, where they joined thousands of other cyclists lobbying legislators for more bike-friendly laws.

Roswell Mayor Jere Wood led about 750 cyclists from the city to the state capitol, where they joined an estimated 2,000 cyclists lobbying legislators for cycling safety as part of the sixth annual Georgia Rides To The Capitol. On the steps of the capitol, cyclists, attired in a rainbow sea of colorful jerseys and spandex, munched on cookies as they listened to a parade of officials talk about Georgia’s efforts to improve cycling in the state.  Cycling advocates urged lawmakers to pass a law that would require motor vehicles to leave at least three feet when passing a cyclist. Although that bill did not “cross over” and is dead for this session, the cyclists were undeterred, frequently breaking into chants of “Three Feet Rule.” Wood said …

It is great to see a Mayor who uses, embraces, and promotes pedestrian & Bicycle sidewalks & paths throughout the City of Roswell, Atlanta, and the rest of the State of Georgia as well. Great Walkways, Greenways, Bike Paths allow for an increase in pedestrian activity, health, and a decrease in automobile use. Moving in the right direction. Environmental Impact of Extending Riverside Trail Concerns Residents

Residents turned out Thursday evening to air concerns about the environmental impact of extending Riverside Trail.

Trails and boardwalks for pedestrians and bicyclists along the Chattahoochee River are appealing to many Roswell residents, but they do not want to sacrifice the habitat of the area for that pleasure. This concern, among others, was stressed Thursday evening, Mar. 10, when the city held its final public meeting about the Roswell Riverside Trail Connection. About 100 residents turned out for the meeting where they were able to study maps detailing proposed trails and boardwalks. They were also able to speak to city officials and staff from the National Parks Service. At issue are the fourth and fifth phases of projects for the Riverside Trail. For 10.2 miles, the trail winds along the Chattahoochee River in Roswell until it ends at the …

It has been proven time and time again all over the country, that when a change is proposed the fear factor comes out. Then those so apposed become the braggers and advocates of that trail they thought they didn't want. This trail means economic impact to our community. In this 6th Congressional District there is currently 16.6 million spent annually at 42 retail outlets on just bicycle related …   more ›
