Proposed Charter School Hosting Second Town Hall

International Charter School of Atlanta holding Saturday meeting at Forsyth Conference Center.

Founders of a proposed multi-language immersion charter school in nearby Forsyth County are hosting a second town hall on Saturday. The International Charter School of Atlanta, if approved, would be open to students from Forsyth, Fulton, Cherokee, Cobb, Gwinnett and DeKalb counties, with the ultimate goal of its students becoming fluent in several languages. Organizers say that this event will provide updated information on curriculum, language tracks and student count since the February town hall. At the time, the school had some 200 "intents to apply" and has doubled registration in a month. "Many people have asked, 'If I came to the first town hall, do I need to come to the second?'" stated an e-mail blast from Founding Board of …

Proposed Charter School Would Serve All Counties

International Charter School hosting town hall on Tuesday.

A proposed charter school in Forsyth County that would be open to all children in the state - including those in Roswell - is hosting a Town Hall to introduce itself to the community on Tuesday. Following the November election in which voters approved an amendment giving the state the power to approve charter schools, a group of parents and educators have filed an intent to launch the International Charter School of Atlanta. The group claims that the school would be the first and only triple-language immersion K through 8th grade school open to all children in Georgia. "We've had way more intents to apply than expected," so far, said Christina Crumbley, one of the school's board members. She said the school has seen 160 intents and "we …

Wells Fargo's Lawsuit First Step in Foreclosure Process

The bank needs to sell the Fulton Science Academy property where a new school was to be built so it can recover the investment of bondholders.

A lawsuit against Fulton Science Academy is a step in the foreclosure process on school property that will allow Wells Fargo to recover the investment of bondholders, according to the bank and the school's attorney. "Wells Fargo acts as a trustee for publicly held bonds and has a responsibility to recover the investment of the bondholders. Wells Fargo is following the appropriate legal procedures to foreclose on this property," said Jamie Dexter in a statement issued by Wells Fargo. The property is on Fanfare Way in Alpharetta, which is next to the west side of GA 400. Only the middle school organization was the target of the lawsuit, Dexter said. Fulton Sunshine Academy and Fulton Science Academy High School were named in the suit because…

So, the school owed Wells Fargo $9.9 million? The property was sold on the courthouse steps for $3.2 million to TruGlobe, a Turkish owned and operated business. No connection? If FSA wants to be a public charter school, transparency and honesty are required. I hope the new state Charter Schools Commission is aware of this!! (and are not being swayed by free trips to Turkey or campaign …   more ›

Charter School Parents Claim State Board of Education Was Misled

But the state responds that it had all the information requested from and offered by Fulton Science Academy Middle School.

A day after the state Board of Education refused to grant a charter to Fulton Science Academy Middle School, 100 or more individuals identifying themselves as FSA parents accused state employees and the Board's own charter committee of having "intentionally impeded, stonewalled and misrepresented FSA." Louise Erste, director of the Charter Division at the state Department of Education was singled out. "I believe Erste misinformed and misled the Board down a path that was politically motivated and unfair," was one of the complaints. These claims are similar to what has been said in comments made on articles and a letter to the editor on Roswell and Alpharetta-Milton Patch. Patch user "Terry" made a related complaint on May 8, after the …

Nothing like giving FSA which known problems for the past 10 years more special treatment because they claim to be a "blue ribbon" school status. Look more closely, this school had problems prior to this current downward spiral, they were told to cut ties with Grace Institute, but instead kept billing for services (double dipping in many cases) The parents that are complaining need to do some …   more ›

Fulton Science Academy Middle School Plans to Go Private

School announces plans for 2012-2013 just hours after final rejection of its appeal to become a state charter special school.

Fulton Science Academy Middle School announced this evening that it has a plan to open as a private school in August. Earlier today, the state Board of Education denied the school's application to become a state charter special school. “This is [the] best way for our school doors to remain open for our students, families, teachers, and staff,” said Ayhan Korucu, FSA Governing Board President, in a statement.  “We believe our plan to become a private school is achievable for the 2012-2013 school year; however, we know that sadly some of our student body will be unable to attend our school due to the financial implications of this plan." "We intend to use donations and grant funding to provide scholarships to help off-set tuition costs for …

Let them go private, I say let the gulenists have 500 schools in America so long as they are private and not touching American Tax money that is washed and laundered through the Gulenists NGOs like Grace Institute then used to lobby for Turkey or Turkish culture promotions. State May Decide Charter School's Fate Today

The Georgia Board of Education's charter committee wants the full board to fast track a vote on the state charter application of Fulton Science Academy Middle School.

As soon as today, parents and the 500 students at Fulton Science Academy Middle School could learn whether the school will be open next fall – but it doesn't seem likely. The Georgia Board of Education's charter committee will recommend to the full board today that they fast track a vote on Fulton Science Academy Middle School's state charter application. If the state board agrees and follows the Georgia Department of Education's recommendation for denial, teachers and staff at the school will need to look for other jobs, if they haven't already started. Justin Pauly, a liaison for the state Board of Education at the Department of Education, said the committee is asking to move the decision up by a month because of the reasons in the …

Fulton Science Academy Gets Site Approval by State

The middle school still needs a charter to stay open past June, and approval of its building and site plans.

Fulton Science Academy Middle School has gotten approval for the school site its board chose, and has already paid off. "We've approved the site, that's all we've approved," said Lynn Jackson, facilities director for the GA Department of Education. Her staff is reviewing the facility plan. But that's not the only hurdle for FSA. "Everything is also still subject to whether or not the school is approve as a charter going forward then end of its charter term, I think it is in June," she said. School officials are confident, announcing the site approval this afternoon and saying the plan to move into the new building on the 44-acre campus for the 2012-2013 school year. "FSA Middle School has been operating with outstanding academic results in…

Fulton County Schools Rejects Fulton Science Academy's Request to Approve 3-Year Charter

Unless a state charter can be obtained, the middle school likely will be closed during the 2012-13 school year at the very least.

The Fulton School System rejected a request by the Fulton Science Academy Middle School's governing board to approve a three-year charter renewal that the school's governing board said met all of Superintendent Robert Avossa's requirements. The school system will review the latest charter revision during the school's annual petition application, which doesn't begin until March 2012. "Any approved charters would begin operations during the 2013-2014 school year," the latest release by Fulton School Board President Linda Schultz and Avossa today said. (Read the full release, attached as a pdf to this article.) If the school board doesn't change its mind, or the state doesn't grant a charter, Fulton Science Academy Middle School will be …

Fulton Lawmakers Push School Board to Approve Charter Renewal

The legislators say rejecting a revised application for Fulton Science Academy Middle School that meets all of Superintendent Avossa's demands 'is not the right answer.'

The Fulton legislative delegation–including Rep. Jan Jones of Milton and Rep. Chuck Martin of Alpharetta–have asked the Fulton School Board to accept a revised charter renewal application from Fulton Science Academy. "The ramifications of closing this school have far reaching negative effects for all of Georgia," the letter released today stated. The lawmakers say refusing to grant the charter will lead to the closing of Fulton Science Academy High School and Fulton Sunshine Academy, the two schools allied with the middle school in a an $18.5 million bond issue to pay for a new building for all three schools. "We have a legal opinion and confirmation from the State of Georgia that your Board does have the power and authority to accept the …

Fulton School Board Denies Fulton Science Academy Middle School Charter

By unanimous vote, the Fulton County School Board has killed a request from Fulton Science Academy Middle School to continue to operate for another ten years.

By unanimous vote, the Fulton County School Board has killed a request from the charter Fulton Science Academy Middle School to continue to operate for another ten years. "We're not going to stop," said disappointed FSA parent Lauri Crowe Kowalski after the hour-long meeting and minute-long vote, "but it's a big bump." The Alpharetta school wants a charter renewal for at least eight years, but schools Superintendent Robert Avossa recommended only three. He said FSA needs to synch its charter cycle with Fulton Science Academy High School and Fulton Sunshine Academy because the three are issuing a $19 million building bond together. That alignment is necessary for responsible financial oversight and stewardship of Fulton taxpayer money, he …
