Staff furloughs, lab construction delay were required in the fallout from overspending at the college.
Georgia Perimeter College had to cut 10 staff from its North Fulton campus in Alpharetta and use $1 million intended for wet labs to help cut its budget deficit. Robb Watts, the college's president, told staff in May 2012 that the college had a $16 million deficit. It turned out the budget problems were worse than that. The AJC reported earlier this month that the college had cut $25 million from its budget, but learned it had to cut another $1.6 million. “I do not have all of the answers today about what happened, nor do I know all the steps we will take to fix things,” he said in May. A field of 30 LPGA legends made their way to the Country Club of Roswell Sunday to get ready for the inaugural Judson Collegiate Invitational and Legends Tour Atlanta Pro-Am hosted by 5-time Legends Tour Champion and Atlanta area resident Rosie Jones. When college attendance rates among Fulton County Schools students are studied within context of academic and socioeconomic background, prior gaps between white, black and Hispanic decline.
The Fulton County School System recently released a study results that reveal patterns about its high school students and their college readiness. Conducted by Harvard University’s Strategic Data Project, the analysis combined high school graduation and college enrollment data to determine the number of students who go on to higher education and how successful they are at the collegiate level. Some of the report’s findings indicate that the gap in college enrollment rates between black students and white students in the Fulton County School System almost disappears once prior achievement and socioeconomic background is accounted for. The Georgia Institute of Technology is a difficult school to gain admittance to - very difficult. The school recently said the average high school grade point average for those accepted to Georgia Tech for the 2012 fall semester is 3.9 with an average SAT score of 1430 or 2105 with writing included. That represents an average of 700 points for each section. Approximately 14,700 students applied for acceptance to Georgia Tech for the 2012-13 school year, an Institute record and a three percent increase from last year. Each student is vying for one of the 2,400 spots for fall admission or the 250 spots available to start this summer. Roswell High School holds mock SAT and ACT exams and followup workshops this month.
Standardized tests during high school can mean the difference between getting a scholarship or not getting into college. In other words, there's a lot riding on those big tests with short acronyms. To help better prepare students for the SAT and ACT exams, Roswell High School is sponsoring mock exams in the RHS cafeteria on Feb. 18 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Exams are actual retired tests and are proctored by Studyworks of Roswell, a local test prep company, providing a real exam experience. A separate no-charge workshop is offered to all mock exam participants and their parents on Feb. 29 from 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. in the RHS media center. The FAFSA Workshop will be held next Monday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. Financial Aid outreach specialists will go over the 2012-2013 FAFSA line-by-line.
