Several Elkins Pointe Middle School students recently participated in the American Mathematics Competition. Nine students performed in the top 25 percent of the nation. The school is especially proud of Andrew Lang, who scored in the top 5 percent of the nation and Roopsha Bandopadhyay, who scored in the top 1 percent. Youth Archer Sandra Kennedy won the gold medal and state championship for Female Recurve Archers, 14 and under, at the Georgia Archery Association's 2012 State Target Championships last weekend. Over two days, Kennedy - a Roswell resident who attends Elkins Pointe Middle School - shot 144 arrows at distances of 50 meters, 40 meters, 30 meters and 20 meters. The championship was held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22-23 at the Earl O’Neal Sports Complex in Conyers, Ga. For more information, contact Andry Kennedy, 678-313-4796.

The Roswell High School Band recently participated in a four-day cruise festival at sea. The band sailed on the Royal Caribbean ship “Monarch of the Seas” to the port of Nassau and CocoCay in the Bahamas. While on board, the Concert Band and Guard units were each judged. Both units received the highest ratings possible. Several band sections and soloists were also recognized with superior performance awards. Band members also enjoyed touring the islands, snorkeling, shopping and experiencing the ship. The Band and Guard will receive final competitive ratings in June comparing them to all bands sailing on cruise festivals this year.

For the first competition of the season, Roswell City Dance (RCD), competed in the regional competition March 16-18 at the Starpower Dance Competition held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. RCD - the city of Roswell’s competitive dance company - won over 50 awards for dance and choreography, which was the highest number of awards won by any studio at Starpower in Atlanta. RCD competed in the "Power" division, the highest level of competition at Starpower. As well as winning top awards in almost every age bracket and category, one group piece, "The Only Fault," won the highest overall score for the entire competition. The squad took top honors for their category during the cheerleading competition at Roswell High School this weekend when no other teams from the large group category showed up to compete.
