It’s a heartfelt Crabapple Middle School tradition to invite grandparents to a holiday tea and to share special memories with their grandchildren. This year was no exception. Many students participated, writing and presenting a special family memory to their grandparents. The honored Grandparents were treated to breakfast and serenaded by the band, orchestra, and chorus. D’Andre and his grandmother, Brenda Lofton listened to the holiday music during the event. Brenda is visiting from East Chicago, Indiana, and it’s the first time she’s been able to visit Roswell for the holidays, making this year extra special. D’Andre’s special memory of his grandmother is at Christmas time, when it is usually him who’s traveling.

Crabapple Middle School (CMS) Builders Club students visited the Child Development Association (CDA) in Roswell on Dec. 12 to help provide a Christmas for low-income families throughout Atlanta. The CDA provides affordable early learning programs and childcare for preschool children of low-income families in the metro Atlanta area. The CMS’s Builders Club helped Santa deliver presents filled with books, stickers and healthy foods. The children were all smiles when the elves and Santa were in the room. Santa, his Elves and the Builders Club serenaded each grade with “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Following the visit to the CDA, Santa and his elves immediately returned to the North Pole to supervise final preparations for the big night.

Crabapple Middle School students organized and delivered donated supplies to the Drake House as part of a new pilot program. The Drake House mission is to provide short term crisis housing, support, and empowerment to homeless mothers and their children in the North Fulton area. Lynn Canty, the Director of Volunteer Services for the Drake House, was contacted and she informed the group that toiletries are always needed so the staff at CMS rallied and donated many useful supplies. Chloe Holben, seventh grade student, was the project manager. The Friendship Circle team then organized and wrapped the donations. On Oct. 30,Holben and Nancy Spix delivered the cheerful packages to the Drake House. While there, Holben was able to interview …

In an amazing collaboration of students, parents, teachers, and community, Crabapple Middle School held a fall campus beautification day in early November. It turned out to be the biggest clean-up effort in CMS history, with almost 100 people lending a hand to spruce up the school yard. The Kiwanis and Keep Roswell Beautiful provided volunteers, gloves, tools, hot chocolate and doughnuts. Andy Kadrich, CMS parent and owner of Turf Masters, donated pine straw and mulch for the school yard, and the loan of a Roto-Tiller for the campus garden. Mimi Gamel, of CMS, organized the participating volunteer groups such as the Builder’s Club, Jr. Beta Club, SAVE Club, Student Government, Interact Club, and Roswell High School’s Key Club. A great …

Who says getting involved at school is for moms only? At Crabapple Middle School, the Dads Club is setting stereotypes aside, rolling up their sleeves and getting involved with their children’s school. To celebrate (and perhaps recruit), the CMS Dads Club held their second annual tailgate at the Roswell High School football game versus Cherokee on Friday night, Oct., 26. Fred Barth, Rich Barrett, and Barney Bucy, Dads Club president, grilled hot dogs and burgers while the kids played. The tailgate was followed by a win for the RHS Hornets making it a great day for CMS Dads and their families. “It’s great to be part of the community. Dads Club gives me a way to stay involved,” said Barth, CMS father and chief grill master at the tailgate…

The Crabapple Middle School “Learn and Serve Garden” grew from a seed of an idea via science teachers Glenn Mize and Jeanetta Lewisand and language arts teacher Shelley Merritt. The trio wanted to bring their lessons to life in the garden by giving students “get-your-hands-dirty” earth science experiences while giving back to the local community. Mize wanted students to experience science beyond the books, coupling what he learned in the garden from his father and grandfather. He wanted kids to see “the miracle” of how one seed from a dead plant can be planted to produce a vine that spreads out across the garden and bears fruit to feed hundreds. CMS sixth graders plant the garden during “Go Green Day” in the spring and a dedicated group of…

Junior Achievement brings "It’s My Business!" to Crabapple Middle School.
Crabapple Middle School students got a dose of the real world when it comes to business recently, thanks to Junior Achievement's "It's My Business" program. The one-day program focuses on financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship for students. The students learned about product knowledge, how to show creativity and confidence in starting a business and how to compete in the global marketplace. Members of the local business community stopped by the school to boost career-awareness and incorporate their career experiences into lessons for sixth grade students last Friday. But Junior Achievement staff know that students learn better when presented with a chance to put their new knowledge to use; so teams of students …

Crabapple Middle School and Mimosa Elementary need local voters to support their quest to win $50,000 in grant money from the Clorox Company's "Power a Bright Future" program.
Students at local schools Crabapple Middle School and Mimosa Elementary School already have bright futures ahead, but your votes could make them just a bit brighter if they're enough to win Clorox's "Power a Bright Future" program and the grant money it may bring. In a move to fund school programs that "are vital for educational development," the Clorox Company's Power A Bright Future program will award four $25,000 grants and one $50,000 grant to schools nationwide. Until early last week, parents and teachers from across the country were able to nominate schools by sharing how a grant would be used at their school. Crabapple Middle School said it would use the funds to bring classroom technology into the 21 Century, go to the website to …

Dr. Nathan Buhl, the principal at Crabapple Middle School, sent out a letter to parents today regarding a recent social media incident involving students.
In regards to a Facebook hacking and posted threats involving Crabapple Middle School students, the school's principal, Dr. Nathan Buhl, urged parents not to be alarmed. But he did ask them to be aware of their child's Internet activity, in a letter sent out today. "Please know that nothing has occured at our school and that instruction was not disrupted in any way," he began the letter. Buhl was referring to an incident on the first day of school in which a student's Facebook account was allegedly hacked before the same account posted threats against other students. Still, the school system worked with Roswell Police to interview the student whose account it was, "but found no credible evidence to support the threats," according to Buhl. …
