Five-Year-Old Volunteer Boosts Drake House Support

Andrew Boyd, age five, is already a successful volunteer for the Drake House of Roswell.

One of the Drake House’s most effective volunteers is under the table. He hasn’t been drinking; he’s literally under the table. Five-year-old Andrew Boyd decided the table was the perfect spot to regain his bearings after awakening from an afternoon nap. Fully revived, Boyd eventually rights himself and heads to check out the Drake House pantry. But he's not looking for a mid-day snack, it’s already dawning on him that the donated goods there are the lifeline of Drake House residents. The Drake House is a Roswell organization that supplies temporary apartment housing for moms with minor children. The organization offers women 128 days of free housing, giving mothers in need a way to keep their family intact and stabilize their financial …

North Fulton Hospital Raises Almost $20,000 for the Cure

The Power of Pink luncheon raised awareness, donations.

North Fulton Hospital used the Power of Pink to raise almost $20,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. CEO Debbie Keel and Lindsey Harber, director of Business Development of North Fulton Hospital, presented a check to Kelly Dolan, the executive director of the Greater Atlanta affiliate for $19,773. The donation encompasses the proceeds of the Power of Pink, the breast cancer awareness luncheon hosted by the hospital last month. “To raise such a significant amount of money at an inaugural event is a point of pride for the hospital,” said Keel. “We could not have done it without our generous sponsors, the involvement of the community and the efforts of our Women’s Advisory Board.” The event was held at the Country Club of Roswell, where …

North Fulton Community Charities Needs School Supplies, Volunteers

Back to School Fair distributes backpacks, other school supplies to low-income and disadvantaged children.

Back to school means time for supplies and perhaps a new backpack for the kids. But for some parents, the return to the classroom isn't that welcome because they don't have the money in the family budget to buy new school supplies. North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC) hosts its annual Back to School Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, Aug. 13 to make sure low-income and disadvantaged children start school with the supplies they need. This event provides students in grades K-12 with brand new backpacks filled with school supplies and provides parents with the resources they need to have a safe and healthy school year.  “I remember how excited my children would be after getting their new backpacks ready for the first day of school. They…

North Fulton Chamber Needs Community to Donate Food

The business organization is holding its annual food drive to benefit North Fulton Community Charities.

Once the school ends for the year, a whole lot of children start going hungry. These children rely on breakfast and lunch at their schools. But with school out for the summer, they suddenly have very little to eat. The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce recognized this and four years ago started what's now an annual food drive. The drive started yesterday, Monday, June 13, and ends on Friday, June 17 with a collection at First Citizens Bank on Haynes Bridge Road, right in front of the chamber offices. "Donations in the summer are particularly low because everybody is on vacation," sad the chamber's Kendra Plotkin, who has organized the food drive. Coupled with the lack of subsidized lunches the area's children in poorer homes–which, …

Stamp Out Hunger a Success in Roswell

North Fulton Community Charities benefitted greatly from the recent Stamp Out Hunger Campaign Drive, held May 14.

They asked; you answered. The 19th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Campaign Drive held May 14 did a great deal to fill the pantries at North Fulton Community Charities (NFCC). The drive, the nation’s single largest, supports local food pantries throughout the country. Here locally, that means donations left at mailboxes throughout North Fulton went to benefit NFCC. The organization recently announced that it received 16 tons of food because of the drive. According to NFCC, the food drive is vital since food requests in the summer increase with children home from school while donations dwindle. Currently, NFCC is giving out 9 tons of food and staple goods per week. “The timing of Stamp Out Hunger is perfect. Many of the families that we serve have …
