At its recent April meeting, the Fulton County Board of Education took its first look at the school system’s general fund operating budget for the 2013-2014 school year. The $836.5 million budget proposed by Superintendent Robert Avossa reflects a .6 percent decrease from last year and no increase in millage property taxes, yet includes a 3 percent salary increase for employees and a 10 percent increase in academic and athletic supplements. Fulton County Schools adopted a new budgeting approach this year that closely aligns funding needs with the district’s priorities. More jobs and fewer layoffs in most metro Atlanta counties helped push the state's unemployment rate down to 8.4 percent, it's lowest since December 2008.
The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dipped to 8.4 percent in March, the lowest rate since December 2008. The rate declined from 8.6 percent in February because of an increase in the number of jobs and fewer new layoffs. The rate was down from 9.1 percent in March a year ago. “Georgia employers created 23,700 jobs last month, which is one of the best job growth numbers we’ve had in March for almost a decade,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “The growth was in several industries, led by leisure and hospitality and professional and business services.” Additional growth came in trade, transportation and warehousing, construction and local government. Fulton County hopes residents will reach out if they see something suspicious.
In the aftermath of the tragedy in Boston this week, the Atlanta-Fulton Emergency Management Agency is asking local residents to remain vigilant in reporting suspicious activity with a "See Something, Say Something" campaign. Because local law enforcement agencies depend on community members to increase their eyes and ears on the streets, the campaign encourages everyone to call 911 if they see something suspicious. "Unfortunately, incidents such as the April 15 attack in Boston highlight the need for ongoing vigilance by all community members," said Matthew Kallmyer, Director of the Atlanta-Fulton Emergency Management Agency.
