Powerhouse Self-Defense Trains Hundreds of Girl Scouts

The Roswell self-defense company empowered 625 girls during a week at camp in Savannah, Ga.

The Powerhouse Self-Defense program in Roswell was only established in November of 2011, but already it has begun to empower and educate hundreds of girls and women across the country, including 625 Girl Scouts of America during their Centennial Camporee in Savannah, Ga. during June. Over the past eight months, Powerhouse Self-Defense has held workshops for local girl scouts at the headquarters located in Mableton, Ga. The partnership resulted in a request by the Girl Scouts organization to go more widespread with the self-defense education, inviting the local business to attend the Camporee. Girl Scouts Celebrate 100 Years as Organization

Girl Scouts from all over the metro Atlanta area celebrated the organization's lengthy history on its 100th birthday, March 12.

Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, Inc. (GSGATL) celebrated 100 years of the world’s premier organization for girls at the council headquarters in Mableton, Georgia, last week.  The event included the participation and attendance of the new CEO, Girl Scouts of the USA, Anna Maria Chávez, the first Latina to head the international organization. Special commemorative activities included the burial of a time capsule with 100 memories and memorabilia from the area council’s girls and alumnae that had been collected for the occasion, and for posterity. Attendees gathered in the council’s Memory Garden at GSGATL headquarters to bury the capsule. In addition, it was announced that all girl babies born at Northside Hospital’s three hospitals on the …

Girl Scouts Plant Trees at Hembree Springs

Girl Scout troops 27322, 10517, and 28314 helped plant seedlings at the school on Saturday, Feb. 18.

Hembree Springs Elementary School is the proud beneficiary of over 50 trees thanks to the Roswell Rotary Trees Across Roswell project. Tara and David Robertson of Ecosystems Services, Inc., a local irrigation services company, coordinated receiving the trees from Roswell Rotary and the planting by three Girl Scout troops, the Hembree Springs Dads Club and parent volunteers, including Roswell City Councilman Rich Dippolito. Girl Scout troops 27322, 10517, and 28314 brought shovels, pine straw, volunteers and fun to the community beautification project. The students are looking forward to watching the small trees grow at their school.

Local Youth to Plant 2,500 Trees this Weekend

Coordinated efforts between the city, local non-profits and the Boy and Girl Scouts of America are responsible for this massive undertaking.

More than 2,500 trees will be planted throughout North Fulton during the week of Georgia's Arbor Day, Feb. 17. Dubbed "Trees Across Roswell," the joined effort is a partnership between the Roswell Rotary Club, the Chattahoochee Nature Center, the city of Roswel the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of America. "A considerable amount of effort and coordination has gone into the planning," Theo Keyserling of the Roswell Rotary. The festivities begin with a kick off event at the Chattahoochee Nature Center at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, featuring several local and state leaders. Organizers predict around 350 children will pick up the 2,500 seedlings purchased by Roswell Rotary with instructions and maps of the Roswell area indicating where…

Local Students Grab Reflections Awards in Roswell

North Fulton students in grades kindergarten through 12th picked up awards at the Teaching Museum North in Roswell for the PTA Reflections competition.

Parents at the North Fulton Council PTA Reflections Reception on Wednesday afternoon at the Roswell Teaching Museum were fairly bursting with pride. Awards for literature, visual arts, film, musical composition, dance choreography and photography for each grade level - kindergarten through 12th - were handed out by volunteers for the PTA's nationally sponsored Reflections competition. The theme this year was “Diversity means …” First, second, third and honorable mention awards went to students throughout North Fulton including Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Sandy Springs. Roswell Girl Scouts Host Northwoods Twilight Camp

This eleventh year of camp is held at Northbrook United Methodist Church for area Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, Roswell Service Unit is hosting its eleventh annual Northwoods Camp this week.   The camp, which has a theme of “The Amazing Race” this year, has over 140 campers and a volunteer staff of 45 adults and 16 teens who have been taking over the campus of Northbrook United Methodist Church each day this week during twilight, from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Campers have a "passport" that leads them around the world as they try new activities, as well as timeless camp favorites such as arts and crafts, archery, songs and games. In the tradition of Girl Scouts everywhere, the Northwoods Twilight Camp continues to help the local community by highlighting the following non-profit agencies: Ronald McDonald House, Foster Care …

Two Roswell Students Attend Girl Scout Camp CEO

Rachel Grucza and Theresa Kilian learned a little about business during a recent camp.

Roswell High School students Rachel Grucza and Theresa Kilian got a dose of the life of successful business when they recently attended the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, Inc. 2nd Annual Camp CEO.
