Maria Walden-Sullivan has built a life around giving to charity. Her Roswell consignment shop, Vintage & Vogue, supports Atlanta non-profits and she has plans to expand.
Maria Walden-Sullivan was on vacation in New Mexico two summers ago when it hit her; she knew how she could raise money for charity, even in a dismal economy: consignment. Two weeks later, she was driving through the Roswell Square and saw a store for rent. It was serendipity. She took it. With no retail background, but plenty of experience in charitable fundraising, she opened Vintage & Vogue, an upscale consignment shop, with the goal of donating proceeds to Atlanta-area charities. “I had always been on so many boards and I’d always been asking people for money. I’ve always shopped in consignment stores and I thought what better way to ask people [to give] than to reach into their closets instead of their pockets,” she told Roswell Patch…

Sunshine on a Ranney Day, a new nonprofit based in Roswell, gives room makeovers to kids with long-term illness.
As a buyer for Rooms To Go Kids, with many connections in the furniture industry, Holly Ranney wanted to give something back in the best way she could. So last spring, she started Sunshine on a Ranney Day – a non-profit organization based in Roswell that gives dream room makeovers to kids with long-term illness. “I felt that these children – it was beyond their control,” Ranney told Patch. “They can’t go to school on a daily basis and have a normal childhood.” In July, the group gave its first makeover to Mathew Majka, an 11-year-old boy who is fighting a brain tumor. A group of 18 volunteers – nine of them from Roswell - went to Mathew’s home in Bonaire, Ga. Because Mathew wants to go into the military one day, they chose a military theme…

Drew Erickson, president of Young Men's Service League, Northeast Atlanta Chapter, led fellow members in a clothing drive to support in-need students at six North Fulton County schools.
Local Centennial High School student, Drew Erickson, has a passion for helping others and his efforts to collect clothing, of all things, haven't gone unnoticed. In fact, Erickson's work is quite important to high school students at six North Fulton schools who otherwise wouldn't have the clothing they need for school and daily life because of family hardship. Erickson, president of the Young Men's Service League, Northeast Atlanta Chapter (YMSL), founded "Students Helping Students," during 2009 when he was only a freshmen in high school. The group began collecting and distibuting clothing to students locally. Now a junior, Erickson has banded together with some of his fellow YMSL members to hold seven clothing drives. In total, the group …

Program director for Project LIFT, Amanda Reed loves seeing positive change in the lives of local students.
Amanda Reed has a hard time narrowing down a story that's impacted her the most during her time with Project LIFT, a non-profit mentoring program for at-risk students in Roswell. Pushed, she shares the story of Dominic, who has gotten a job, raised his grades to a B average and smiles more often since entering the program. Though Reed doesn't say it, she conveys the idea that something as simple as smiling can often be a better measuring stick for success than a standardized test. "He has a great smile," she adds. Reed has always had a passion for improving teenagers' quality of life. She graduated from the University of Minnesota, Morris with a degree in psychology. But just like many graduates, she ended up working outside of that degree…

Vintage & Vogue, an upscale women’s consignment shop with a charitable mission, is opening a consignment bridal boutique next door to its Roswell Square location. The shop, called I Do & I’m Done, is looking for bridal and bridesmaid dresses.
Times are hard, but giving back doesn't have to be. Or at least that's the theory behind Vintage & Vogue, an upscale Roswell Square women’s consignment shop with a charitable mission. Vintage & Vogue has been in business for just over a year. Maria Walden-Sullivan, the owner, had a career in philanthropy and recognized that it was becoming harder for people to give to charity in a tough economy. With no retail experience, she opened her shop with the goal of donating proceeds to charity. “With the economy the way it is, I think this is a better way to ask for money,” Sullivan said. “People can donate something from their closet and give back that way.” Here’s how it works. People bring in clothes to sell on consignment and they receive 40…

Andrew Boyd, age five, is already a successful volunteer for the Drake House of Roswell.
One of the Drake House’s most effective volunteers is under the table. He hasn’t been drinking; he’s literally under the table. Five-year-old Andrew Boyd decided the table was the perfect spot to regain his bearings after awakening from an afternoon nap. Fully revived, Boyd eventually rights himself and heads to check out the Drake House pantry. But he's not looking for a mid-day snack, it’s already dawning on him that the donated goods there are the lifeline of Drake House residents. The Drake House is a Roswell organization that supplies temporary apartment housing for moms with minor children. The organization offers women 128 days of free housing, giving mothers in need a way to keep their family intact and stabilize their financial …

Edie Davidson, a survivor of domestic abuse, has empathy while volunteering for HomeStretch of Roswell.
These days Edie Davidson is a volunteer at HomeStretch in Roswell; but looking back, the domestic abuse survivor didn't know if she would make it this far, much less be able to help others coming out of similar situations. There is a lot of laughter around the HomeStretch offices, where Davidson tries to give back by volunteering every week. HomeStretch is a non-profit organization that supplies temporary housing to homeless families. Davidson can definitely relate. “There were no support groups in those days [when I faced homelessness],” Davidson said. “It was always your fault. If a woman was homeless, it was her fault. If you were beat up, it was always your fault.” Davidson, who has been with HomeStretch for three years, performs …
