Saint Patrick and the History of St. Patrick's Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day -- the day that the Irish wait for every year and the day that the non-Irish become Irish for 24 hours.

If you’re like me with an Irish last name but hardly any Irish in you, St. Patrick's Day is the day you politely tell people that you aren’t wicked excited that it’s St. Patrick’s Day. No offense to those of you who are Irish through and through - or wish you were - on March 17. So what is St. Patrick’s Day all about anyway and why do we celebrate it? The Roswell Library and the StoryCorps initiative join forces to record local African-American history, as told to teenagers, during the Roswell Roots celebration.

Roswell’s past may be history, but it won’t soon be forgotten, thanks to the united efforts of the Roswell Library and the StoryCorps initiative. As part of the 10th Annual Roswell Roots celebration, the two entities are teaming up to record and preserve the stories of the city’s African-American community for archival in the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture by allowing teens from Roswell and the surrounding communities to interview family, friends and neighbors. It’s called the StoryCorps Griot project and it’s so named for the honored position of storytellers in West Africa. According to tradition, a “griot” is responsible for handing down the family and community history from one generation to the next. …
