Holcomb Bridge Middle Holds First 'Heritage Day'

The special school day celebrated Georgia history.

Why were buffalo and Civil War re-enactment actors at Holcomb Bridge Middle School recently? These otherwise unexpected guests—and others—were part of the first Georgia Heritage Day hosted by the middle school. Eighth grade students spent a full day of immersion with hands-on, experiential activities to learn about and celebrate Georgia history. Inspired by teachers Elizabeth McMahon and Jennifer Foil, the teaching staff, administration and PTA worked quickly and tirelessly to cover all the bases for a well-orchestrated day that rotated students through seven stations, opening their eyes to history in a highly engaging way. Students made their own pottery; picked cotton; participated in the music and dances from the Cherokee and Creek …

8th Grade Musicians Perform Under Friday Night Lights

Centennial's feeder middle school bands recently performed with the CHS band.

Nearly 100 middle school musicians experienced the thrill of playing under the Friday night lights when they joined the Centennial High School Marching Knights for 8th Grade Night recently. The event took place during the school’s home football game on Oct. 19 and included students from Haynes Bridge Middle School and Holcomb Bridge Middle School, which are feeder schools for Centennial, as well as private school and home school students.   The 8th graders practiced for weeks to perform the Star-Spangled Banner, Centennial’s fight song and stand music alongside the Marching Knights. “Our marching band students work extremely hard on the half-time show and the music they play in the stands each week,” said Michael Reid, Centennial’s …

Former Holcomb Bridge Middle Students Open 20-Year-Old Time Capsule

The momentous occasion, Wednesday, Oct. 10, drew 15 former students from around the country.

A group of former students from the 1992 eighth grade class at Holcomb Bridge Middle School reunited last week for a very special occasion: the opening of a 20-year-old time capsule. Former students, now in their 30s, joined current teachers, administrators, parents and students in the Media Center to witness the rare opening of a time capsule named ‘Powaqqatsi,’ Wednesday, Oct. 10. Led by teacher Marjory Segal, the capsule was sealed on May 28, 1992 and contained artifacts selected to represent the times and demonstrate the students’ passionate commitment to creating a world where humans could coexist peacefully. Fifteen of the 90 students that assembled the time capsule returned to Holcomb Bridge for the special event, traveling from as …

Holcomb Bridge Launches 2nd Annual 'One School, One Book' Project

Holcomb Bridge will participate in “Raising South Sudan” global learning and service, thanks to a collaboration with Mothering Across Continents (MAC).

Holcomb Bridge Middle School recently launched an initiative that combines its 2nd Annual “One School, One Book” Project, a series of inter-disciplinary learning activities about global issues and participation in a global service learning initiative called “Raising South Sudan.” This year’s “One School, One Book” school-wide reading selection is award-winning "A Long Walk to Water," by Linda Sue Park. The book is inspired by the story of Salva Dut, one of approximately 3,800 former "Lost Boys of Sudan" who fled civil war as children, grew up in refugee camps, and were specially invited in 2001 to come to the U.S. and become citizens. The Atlanta metro area was one of the destination cities for the former “Lost Boys.” The Holcomb Bridge …
