Some of the biggest names in music will play at a benefit concert on Wednesday. All proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy victims, via the Robin Hood Foundation.
Huge names in music are lending their talents to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts at the “12-12-12” concert on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Every penny sold from ticket sales will go directly to Sandy victims through the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides material, money and aid to local organizations that are serving families and individuals in the regions hardest hit by the storm, including over 200 Patch towns in New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. Hurricane Sandy would have been considered devastating had it hit anytime throughout the year, but its aftershock is especially felt at the holidays. To help some families up North during this arduous rebuilding process, Roswell's Plum Café will host a benefit fundraiser on behalf of the residents of Breezy Point, NY. The small Queens suburb was devastated by the hurricane when, after being flooded by rushing waters, fires destroyed 110 homes. The community is home to many families of firefighters, EMTs and police officers who commute and work in Manhattan daily. A pair of transplanted Long Island firefighters are driving a surplus fire engine from North Fulton to Island Park, NY.
The residents of Island Park, NY, have had to depend on the kindness of others to keep their homes and businesses safe from fire since Hurricane Sandy, but a fire engine they can call their own is on the way. The Roswell City Council approved the donation of a surplus fire truck to the Long Island area community. Hurricane Sandy put as much as six feet of water in the Island Park fire station, and the seawater destroyed the community's own truck, and much of its equipment. The Roswell Fire Department (RFD) invites the community to help send-off the Fire Engine to be donated to the Island Park, New York Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) on Monday, Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. The Village of Island Park, NY suffered devastating loss as a result of Superstorm Sandy. The 1991 Sutphen fire engine will be used by the department until a new truck can be replaced. In addition, RFD is also donating a PPV Gas Fan. The Roswell mayor and council unanimously approved the donation of both pieces of equipment at the November 14 meeting. The send-off will take place at Roswell Fire Headquarters, 1810 Hembree Road.

The city of Island Park, NY was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, losing all of their fire equipment as well as their fire station.
The village of Island Park, NY has one fire truck, which is one more than it had yesterday, thanks to the city of Roswell. Roswell City Council voted unanimously to donate a 1991 Sutphen fire engine and a surplus PPV gas fan to the village of Island Park, which lost its fire station and all of its fire equipment in Hurricane Sandy just over two weeks ago. When in possession of surplus equipment, Roswell traditionally follows a policy to sell through a competitive bidding process. However, because of the tragic circumstances in Island Park, the city will forgo monetary compensation and donate instead. The heartbreaking images in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy are hard to look at; countless homes, businesses and schools have been left devastated by the destructive superstorm. So moved are several local families that they've banded together and come up with a plan to help. Even better, it's a plan that they hope other community members get involved with, as well. With damage to airports and flooding rampant, Holiday travel could be difficult this year.
It's safe to say that the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy will be felt for a long time up and down the Eastern Seaboard. One of the most immediate effects of the storm may be difficulties in holiday travel arising from flood and storm damage. Marci Zied of Canton's A Love of Travel travel agency doesn't see too many problems for holiday travelers as a result of Hurricane Sandy; in fact, she is leaving for Spain on Friday through New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. "We were worried because JFK was closed earlier, but it will be open to international flights by the time we leave," she said.
